IS YOUR TRAIN OVERBOOKED - TRY USING THIS SMART OPTION

A tip for overbooked trains! - (10 replies)

If anyone is having trouble getting a sleeper train on the day you want it & fed up with waiting lists etc. here's a little tip for you.

When you are told that there is a waiting list etc. have a spare booking form with you and do this:

Book your ticket from a station or two before the one that you are getting on!

As you are a tourist you will invariably be getting on at a major station-along with most other people. This is where the train fills up & therefore you end up on a waiting list!

If you book from a station or two on the line before the computer system doesn't seem to think it's full yet-well that's my theory-it might cost you an extra 20 rupees though. But is well worth the hassle.

By booking 2 stations earlier on the line I've got a sleeper straight away on the same day both times. Seems to work anyway-give it a go next time you're stuck. Don't tell Indian Railways though!

Does this work for a couple of stations ahead - stations that are small and less likely to be crowded - sometimes yes !

HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE IN THE WAITING LIST ALL QUOTAS ARE "RELEASED" BEFORE THE FINAL WAITING LIST IS PUBLISHED - THE EMPTY SEATS EARMARKED FOR STATIONS DOWN AND UP THE LINE ARE RELEASED TO THE WAITING LIST.

1. Good Idea!!

- Thanks fr the tip - i never realised this could be done.
Perhaps the reason why this happens is that when you buy (computerised tickets) from a stn (including the metros) - each stn has a quota (fixed number + location) of tickets for that particular train.

Once those are full you won't get a reserved ticket. By using the preceding stn, the computer uses THAT stn's quota - whch may not have got filled get!

for example , An attempt for a ticket particular train from delhi to mumbai , boarding at abu road would mean the computer would use the abu road quota (8 seats) - you land up with a wait listed ticket. Instead you buy the ticket boarding from ajmer (20 seats quota) and voila - yo get a reserved seat.
Voila!!

2. Am I missing something?

I don't understand. You're saying book for a station ahead of where you actually want to leave from? But if you don't actually board there, wouldn't they void your ticket??????

I mean, that's the way it works with the airlines. In other words if I book a flight Mumbai/Udaipur/Delhi and decide to drive to Udaipur. When I try to board in Udaipur, my seat certainly will not be still there. Or am I misunderstanding your system??

3. maybe

i think theres a chance that the ticket inspectors might notice your seat was empty at the station you booked it from (becuase you wouldn't be there obviuosly),

and resell it to someone else. you then get on further down the line and it may cause problems for all concerned. otherwise i think it would work

WEBYATRA - GOOD POINT

4. Tickets

A booking clerk let me in on this last year - it is all to do with quotas. There were no seats from NJP on the train I wanted as the NJP quota was full so she booked me on from New Bongaigon [I think] as they had quota left and then made an alteration to say I would board at NJP. Yes, it cost a bit more but it got me on the train I wanted in an acceptable way - and all within the rules! And the extra few rupees was affordable.

Have fun.

5. Its bloody incredible

If not Its bloody incredible.

6. yes

the quota is usually the maximum where the train starts.

OKAY GUYS A BIG TIP - in your reservation form you can mention boarding at *yur boarding stn* and it is printed on the ticket and in the records of the computer...

cheers !

7. Nothing unofficial about it

Thats perfectly correct way to do it. I have done that even for places upto 10 stations before. But as suggested by #6, make sure to mark the boarding station to the current one. Or else there are fat chances that you lose your seat..

Another additon.. If you have a booked ticket.. and you want to board from a station which comes on the train route after your one you have booked for, then simply go to any railway station having a computerised reservation and change the name of your boarding station. Just you need to fill a form and they dont charge anything extra for that..

8. Cool idea... but....

the quota we are talking about only relates to the tickets under the special Tourist quota? or any tickets? Can they be purchased anywhere including travel agents? or just the special tourist counters? If so this is the best post in the world!!!!!

Thanks a million rupees!

9. boarding 1 or 2 stations

If the stop where you board less than 15 minutes after
the stop on your ticket they may still hold your seat
because you may have gone to the toilet or boarded
the wrong wagon and had to walk through 12 wagons...
And the controller doesn't pass by every 2 minutes either.

WELL - IT IS A RISK , WHY NOT USE THE " BOARDING AT" FACILITY
