On Survivor 6 Amazon the action shifts to the Amazon jungle. As in the past, 16 contestants compete during the course of 39 days in order to determine who is the ultimate Survivor. The first show will air on February 13th, 2003.

Producers of the show are promising "a new twist" to the game but they didn't go into detail. However, Probst suggests potential players study John Nash's non-cooperative game-playing theory because "all the answers to 'Survivor' are there."

[ Challenge Information ]

Episode 1 - Ryan Aiken
So it's the Gals vs the Guys for the sixth go around. Although the men were proficient in constructing shelter, starting fire and at least attempting fishing they spent most of their time engaging in false bravado. Now we know they were egged on by the camera men...er persons but I felt they went to extremes. They should have spent time doing a skills assessment in order to determine how to best approach the obstacle courses which will be encountered during the first 6 immunity contests.

Another observation that I was alerted to concerned the division of the Tambaqui Tribe (Male Tribe) along age lines. Roger Sexton, the eldest, is trying to exert himself as a leader. He noticed two of the younger male members slacking off and tried to paint them as evictees with other members of the tribe. Not a strong start by any means!

It's too early to pick a winner but, keep in mind that the EVEN number Survivors have been won by the weaker sex so far!
  • Reward Challenge: N/A WINNER:
  • Immunity Challenge: The gals win the initial obstacle course largely because one man, Daniel Lue kept losing his balance on the horizontal log walk portion. Now that should've been enough of an indictment to get rid of him but, by a single vote the tribe shed the actor in the first round. WINNER: Jaburu Tribe (Female Tribe)
Episode 2 - Janet Koth
Did you notice how the gals picked Janet Koth from amongst four different women? Obviously the women haven't formed any small alliances as of yet. Nor have they choosen a "leader" for guidance. This doesn't bode well for them. Winners come from people acting in concert if you recall the prior survivor series. The men have banded together and alliances are forming already.

My initial assessment of Rob Cesternino might be wrong. During the episode, he has been taking on the initiative to form an alliance if possible and has decided that the tribe has got to get rid of Roger Sexton sooner than later.
  • Reward Challenge: The gals win a puzzle assembly race. They were able to accomplish this feat cause the both sides were blindfolded during the gather pieces portion of this contest. WINNER: Jaburu Tribe (Female Tribe) wins bait for fishing. Little good did it do them however.
  • Immunity Challenge: The teams have a couple of minutes to study a hut supposedly used by Amazon tribespeople. After which they are quizzed on facts relating to the setting. WINNER: Tambaqui Tribe (Male Tribe).
Episode 3 - Daniel Lue
Ouch the gals take both challenges this episode. Wow the guys are taking a fatalistic approach to the game in the early running. Discussing who do we get rid of next instead of anticipating what kind of challenges that might be thrown at them. On the other hand the gals appointed the reluctant Deena Bennett as their leader. Under her steerage, the gals straightened out their camp and reduced friction amongst members. Quite the opposite of the men over the course of the last three days.

The men made a smart move in dumping Daniel in a unanimous vote. Few loose ends in case of future ties. I also thought they realized that Roger Sexton does nothing to foster team morale. They have marked him for ejection next it would appear. Interesting how Rob Cesternino is getting alot of airtime. Either he's soon to depart or he's one of the final two!

Meanwhile, in the ladies camp, Jeanne Herbert is being featured over there. As for alliances, three of the young women have split off to bathe and bond away from the elders. No specific action was suggested but, I suspect this could come into play.
  • Reward Challenge: The gals win a "go fish" game matching up grooming articles while playing directly against the men. Although the basket of grooming products was greatly appreciated by the women, the viewer's could clearly see that the men felt it was no great loss. WINNER: Jaburu Tribe (Female Tribe).
  • Immunity Challenge: The teams were each locked in separate cages bound by ropes. Both tribes were tied about the moment they freed their respective machetes but, Matthew Von Ertfelda didn't seem to have much success using the knife to cut the ropes. The men's efforts stalled at that point and the women sailed thru the final steps of the procedure. WINNER: Jaburu Tribe (Female Tribe).
Episode 4 - Joanna Ward
An excellent show with two contests that tested pertinent survival skills, building fire and catching fish. While the gals did well both times, they did come up short. Also, the men seem to finally work as a team. At the end of the show the head count is balanced once again.

I think the story of this episode was the strategical mistake the gals made. Shawna Mitchell became ill, which certainly made her dehydrated and physically weak. As we've all learned from prior incarnations of the show, it's imperative to jettison the weak and the slow during the tribal competition portion in order to have the best players fight to preserve the tribes numbers. Granted, Joanna Ward was a strong player and therefore a threat to the others to win but, the aformentioned game plan can be considered inviolate!
  • Reward Challenge: Fire building competition. Gather loose wood, build fires to burn ropes releasing banners. The reward was a refrigator stocked with Coca-Cola. Just what the men needed to rot what's left of your unbrushed teeth.
    WINNER(?): Tambaqui Tribe (Male Tribe).
  • Immunity Challenge: The teams rowed to a different portion of the Amazon where they fished for piranha. Although the women did well, the better technique of the men brought in the higher overall weight. As an added bonus they were allowed to keep the catch as a food supply. WINNER: Tambaqui Tribe (Male Tribe).
Episode 5 - Jeanne Herbert
The segregation of the sexes ended at the start of this episode. As has occurred many times in the past, the producers brought together a man and a woman from the separate tribes prior to a merger or in this case an exchange, to make some crucial decisions. This time they alternated the selection of varied sexes in order to integrate the men and the women.

So what do you think? Does the rocket scientist, Dave Johnson know what he's doing? He selected the two older guys to stay with him. In the immunity challenge, that winds up costing them a tribesperson when they can't row and grab flags fast enough.

Finally, Dave takes Heidi Strobel aside to proselytize her into joining the men's voiting block to eject Jeanne Herbert. So Heidi forsakes any women's alliance which is confusing. Did she really believe her own feminine wiles will dissuade Dave from ejecting her in the future if she throws in lots with him now? Also the block should vote for the weakest person which would be the deaf gal Christy Smith.
  • Reward Challenge: N/A. Both Tribes was instructed to send their youngest members, Dave Johnson from Tambaqui Tribe (Male Tribe) and Jenna Morasca from Jaburu Tribe (Female Tribe) paddling to another location for fresh food, clean showers and a regular bed to sleep on. The next morning, both choose new members for their tribes intermixing both sexes this time.
  • Immunity Challenge: This contest started with the teams confronted with a "Word Search Puzzle" that they had to locate Amazon related words on. Once they had identified 5 words they had to row around a sandbar retrieving flags with graphics depicting those words and return to shore to place them in holders.
    WINNER: Jaburu Tribe.
Episode 6 - Shawna Mitchell
It would appear that the all gals alliance chances have been squashed with the departure of Shawna Mitchell. The battle of the sexes is essentially over although we're all aware that even number Survivor series are won by a women. Funny, the remaining women still believe themselves to be a formidable force in their own minds. Yet only Deena Bennett has made a power move.

Deena and Rob Cesternino have aligned themselves. This should come as no surprise to veteran followers of the show since both have felt out of touch with other tribe members while sincerely wishing to win it all. Rob has been feigning an alliance with Matthew Von Ertfelda since he has shown his prowess at getting fish, strength in the contests and being manipulated. In addition, Rob is planning ahead for the merger and planning to fake the erstwhile male tribe members of Tambaqui Tribe into believing the olde boy alliance is still intact, prior to working a divide and conquer scam.

I think Dave has reason to be concerned. He senses something going on with the old guys, Roger Sexton and Butch Lockley. Did you notice how Butch's paternal side kicked in to reassure Christy Smith that she is a vital member of the team. Oh brother, a 50 year old player in the house!

Burnett may as well schedule the merger for next episode while the teams are balanced and before another gal is kicked off.
  • Reward Challenge: Log rolling contest with two at a time of the same sex pairing off. Only interesting thing was the twice winning efforts of the deaf gal Christy Smith.
WINNER: Tambaqui Tribe won fresh fruit and spices.
  • Immunity Challenge: The tribes made like human piranha biting off chucks of beef from huge roasts dangling on meat hooks and then depositing them onto a scale.
    WINNER: Tambaqui Tribe.
Episode 7 - Roger Sexton
I can't help but feel the viewers are getting set up. Rob Cesternino and Deena Bennett are getting all the airplay as they work together on their "stealth underdogs" strategy. Although, Deena has already telegraphed her intentions to approach the end game with all women if possible. They quickly got the rest of the new Jaburu Tribe to agree to vote as a unit. It was then no big deal for Deena to coral the remaining 2 women on Tambaqui Tribe to join her ostentsibly to keep the all girl alliance going. So everything's mapped out, we can tune out till the final vote, no?

Not so fast. Normally you should always go after the strongest male immediately following the merger. Deena suggested they take Dave Johnson out first but, everyone agreed that Roger's abusive authoritarian manner could not be tolerated any longer. Trouble is, Dave has been working his svengali act on Heidi Strobel and will now move to form a new coalition.

They left us with Matthew Von Ertfelda acting crazy on the next show. Either he figured out that he's being played or has decided that he has little chance at this point. The writer believes he could be reassimulated into the good ole boys alliance. So if Dave can put together Heidi and Matt, he now needs just one more person. Stay tuned!
  • Reward Challenge: N/A. Jaburu and Tambaqui merged at the start of this show to form a new tribe entitled Jacare. They relocated to a new location where they all enjoyed a feast prior to constructing a new shelter.
WINNER: Jacare (The Combined Tribe) won fresh fruit and spices.
  • Immunity Challenge: The standard perch on a platform out in the water till only one person remains. Yes, we all know it's a gender neutral competition but it's Survivor #6 let's figure something new.
    WINNER: Deena Bennett.
Episode 8 - Dave Johnson
Jeff Probst was trying to leave a subtle wakeup call for the men at the end of the show. Half of the survivors are gone and "The Battle of the Sexes" is back to dead even. According to Rob and Deena's plan the next person to go is Butch Lockley. Should that happen, well the gals would be in the drivers seat.

Voting off Dave was a smart decision this point in the show. However, after that immunity challenge it should be painfully clear to the men that the women would be happy to seize the upper hand and ride it thru till the end. It always goes the same way. If one group gains the advantage at this stage they never relinguish it. A player on the minority has to "Win Out" in order to make the finals.

So here's my take. They never show us everything that transpires and the people have a chance to gather on their own. Rob took Matthew Von Ertfelda aside to assuage his fears on ejection this week. The likelihood is that the men will read Rob the riot act before the next show. Still, other than Rob, none of the remaining men have shown that they will initiate a new action.
  • Reward Challenge: The remaining Jacare members were divided into 3 groups of three people. The contest involving the people trying to retrieve poles stuck in a pool of muddy water while tethered to bungie chords. This contest played out in two phases, the last of which was the winning group of three against each other.
WINNER: Dave Johnson won ice cream sundaes and a bath. He was allowed to share the reward with someone and he picked Deena Bennett. He used the time alone with her to unsuccessfully plead his case for three more days in the jungle.
  • Immunity Challenge: A Q&A test with the standard 3 strikes your out (you're face mask is destroyed) contest where the men picked themselves off. Only the gals were left standing at the end.
    WINNER: Jenna Morasca.
Episode 9 - Deena Bennett
This episode unwound differently and was the best ambush show in the history of Survivor. It started to unravel for Deena when Alex Bell won the reward challenge and selected Jenna Morasca to share afternoon coffee with him. She revealed Deena's plans to him and this set in motion a realignment of alliances.

Rob seemed to shift gears in mid-show. He was aligned with Deena but entering the final half of the show was working to cover his ass. When Alex and Jeanna came to him with a new plan he decided to quickly abandon his original strategy and threw his vote in with them. At this point, it doesn't appear he has a genuine alliance. The new alliance is actually Alex, Jeena and Heidi.

Should Matt win immunity next week, it's possible that Rob might find himself the primary target. It doesn't appear that he's fooling anyone now.
  • Reward Challenge: A target shooting contest using spears, blowguns, bows and arrows. Actually the most accurate shooter was Matt but he came up a bit short on the final shot.
WINNER: Alex Bell won coffee and pastries for himself and Jenna Morasca. These two have shared a mutual attraction for awhile and Jenna clued him into what is going on amongst the gals, especially with Deena's plans for the vote.
  • Immunity Challenge: The olde "Gross Out Eatting" competition. There were several rounds of varied insects to consume. Deena lasted till the final two and then made no effort to eat the final caterpillar.
    WINNER: Matthew Von Ertfelda.
Episode 10 - Alex Bell
Rob continues to bob and weave! What a masterful job up until this point in the show. Alone, with the gals, swinging at a moment's notice to the younger people and then abandoning them to side with the misfits in dumping Alex. Can he continue to piece together a new majority every week?

The show is getting intriguing in it's later stages. The alliances seem to be in a state of flux with the sole exception of the Heidi Strobel and Jenna Morasca pairing which has been around since the beginning of the show. However, the two of them are isolated at this point. Christy is happy to be swept along at this juncture. The remaining three men, Butch Lockley, Matthew Von Ertfelda and Rob Cesternino have come together and may oust the remaining gals.

Summing up. We're at last call for getting rid of the stongest competitors. In the past once you're a member of the final four, you have an excellent chance of winner the entire thing if you can win the final two immunity challange.
  • Reward Challenge: N/A The final seven participated in the standard food auction. Alex Bell ultimately wound up with a steak after an initial poor bid.
  • Immunity Challenge: All tribe members filled out a personal opinion questionaire. The tabulations were used as the basis for a test amongst the survivors. Matthew Von Ertfelda was leading until he was bested at the very end.
    WINNER: Rob Cesternino.
Episode 11 - Christy Smith
Burnett and company have got to be excited about the back-biting and double dealing going on in the current installment of the show. I'm wondering if after Survivor 5's Brian Heidik disclosed nothing during the taping of the show, the staff coerced the contestants to open up to them on camera. Just some grist for the mill of those who feel the show is choreographed!

As always, Rob is driving the action. He's trying to put alliances together on the fly. He must've switched at least four times this episode. I'm glad he revealed a viable goal during the show. He's aware how he's cutting people's throats and has correctly reasoned, at least in my opinion, that Jenna hasn't exactly made friends outside of Heidi and Alex. It turns out, she's the best opponent Rob could face in the finals. He approachs Jenna with his pitch suggesting she abandon Heidi now, whereupon Jenna exposes Rob's alliances to the entire group as fraudulent.

Rob shifts his target to Matthew and approaches Christy to join the other gals and him to accomplish this new objective. She tells him let's stay with the original goal of picking off Heidi and Jenna. Undaunted, Rob goes back to Jenna and pitchs Christy to be voted off next. This time, Jenna relents and will side with Rob. What choice does she have? Jenna took Christy aside to feel her out on the gals re-uniting to do in the guys. Christy turned her down as well.
  • Reward Challenge: A 3-part competition involving searching, rowing or swimming, question answering and jigsaw puzzle solving! Matt was the first as well as the fastest but, he wisely gave up his reward so that everyone else could enjoy a brief visit from their loved one. Ultimately, they allowed Matt to supper with his mother that evening.
    WINNER: Matthew Von Ertfelda.
  • Immunity Challenge: Everyone took up slingshots to break their OWN plates for a change. Each broken plate released a "puck" that was gathered and used in the second stage of the game, a shuffleboard contest. One by one the people exhausted their individual disks, it came down to the final shot by the person who gathered the most disks from the slinshot competition.
WINNER: Jenna Morasca won and yielded to Heidi Strobel.
Episode 12 - Heidi Strobel
The men reasserted control in this episode. What an exciting Survivor series! Although the strongest player could win everything from this point on, there are doubts as to why the next person to be voted off is selected. I guess the men felt Heidi was a threat if she was your opponent in the final two. What I don't understand is so is Butch Lockley! He hasn't threatened anyone nor has he won anything. This makes him an ideal nominee for a non-confrontational winner!

Presently, Rob Cesternino and Jeanne Herbert are despised and Matthew Von Ertfelda and Butch Lockley are the obvious choices to win at this point! I've always thought it was interesting that a mix of these two groups forms the bases of the final two contestants. Winners desire a "loser" to accompany them to the finals. The rumor has been Matt and Jenna so it appears that it's playing out that way! Hell Rob didn't bat an eye at Heidi's departure. No need to feign interest in the women anymore.

  • Reward Challenge: A combination of past and future trials. I felt this was one of the more trying contests in Survivor 6. As expected, Matt won when he was the first to finish and pull away decoding a message from a cipher wheel.
WINNER: Matthew won a Saturn Vehicle and a barbeque. He selected Rob to share the food with him.
  • Immunity Challenge: Each person had to perform retrieval tasks on courses involving ropes. Most of them involved climbing on the ropes one way or another. Again, although he had difficulty navigating the rope tunnel, Matt easily had the fastest overall time.
    WINNER: Matthew Von Ertfelda.
Episode 13 - Day 37: Butch Lockley  Day 38: Rob Cesternino  Day 39: Matthew Von Ertfelda
Matthew Von Ertfelda
Jenna Morasca
Survivor Amazon Winner

I constantly try to remind myself that every week they only show the viewers 44 minutes out of 100 hours of tape shot in 3 days. Not to mention the fact that key interactions amongst the contestants may never be captured in the first place. Not only do I forget this fact about the production but, I then to believe if someone so vehemently expresses an opinion at some point in the recent past, it holds true during those decisive moments in the present. None of this aids people in accurate prognostications of the winner. It also raises the spectre of the show being "scripted" or perhaps a better word is "steered".

Clearly Matt won this game or I must be viewing a different Survivor from everyone else! He was working the hardest, had a strategy and didn't backstab many. Or were those moments of his cutthroat personality left on the cuttin room floor? He was straight forward with his answers at the final tribal council while Jenna came up a bit lame. It seemed the only argument she could advance was the standard "Matt doesn't need the money ploy".

So my read of the jury is as follows:
  • Heidi Strobel obvious vote for her friend Jenna.
  • Alex Bell is a skirt chaser so that's another for Jenna.
  • Christy Smith resented young gal clique, presumed vote for Matt.
  • Deena Bennett resented young gal clique, presumed vote for Matt.
  • Butch Lockley just backstabbed by Jenna and a hard worker like Matt.

so therefore Matt needed just one of the following two votes:

  • Dave Johnson possibly resented Matt for not siding with the men earlier so let's chaulk him up for Jenna.
  • Rob Cesternino His strategies were publicly outted by Jenna, she refused to throw in with his final two plans and at the end Jenna voted him off. This was an automatic vote for Matt!

I'll go tally the votes as 4 to 3 for Matt. Game over! Cut the check! So what happened? I'm beginning to think revenge is over-rated as a vice. Christy Smith said it at the wrap party. She felt Jenna outplayed, outwitted and outlasted the competition so she was the most deserving. Not in my book. Since the first survivor I thought the human trait of relishing and exacting revenge would be the single biggest factor in determining the winner. The person responsible for voting someone off or failing to support their continued presence should feel their wrath. All of Jenna's transgressions were tossed out by the jury for some inexplicable reason. So here's my take on this matter.

As mentioned at the beginning, we didn't see what actually took place. The viewers didn't see how Jenna and Matt reacted to the others in one on one situations. Quite simply, Matt made no attempt to relate to anyone. He tried playing crazy to deflect concern but it must have worked the other way. The other survivors felt he was both a threat and someone who was unapproachable. So fear of the unknown came into play. We didn't see the people give up on trying to talk to him because very little of that actually took place. In short, they never made the attempt!

The show is editted to make it entertaining and to play better. It doesn't offer sterile, journalistic observations of what's transpiring. In the future, I must assume the people let their whims prevail even though it is packaged to create a story in place of the popularity contest that it actually is.

  • Immunity Challenge(1): The final four made their way through a maze collecting necklaces while blindfolded. Matt was ahead but became confused when he tried to solve it together with Rob Cesternino. It's entirely possible that collaboration did them both in.
WINNER: Jenna Morasca who spoke with all three remaining men regarding voting alliances after her victory. She wound up stabbing Butch Lockley in the back thus drawing the only vote against her at the end.
  • Immunity Challenge(2): More or less the standard balance beam event with the latest twist adapted during the last Survivor. They had the last three hold their headresses above their head (so the body tires quickly) while balancing on a beam. Matt deliberately gave in first and I thought Rob was like a deck chair on the Titanic folding in mere minutes!
WINNER: Jenna Morasca who surprising voted off Rob Cesternino leaving her competing with Matthew Von Ertfelda for the winner's share.
