Creating Your Own Site

You can get free space on a Web server for your web site in a variety of places. For instance, your ISP may give you access. AOL and ATT Broadband give you 5-10 meg of memory. The tradeoff typically is that they add banners which are advertisements, and which you may find annoying; however, it may be worth it to you. We will use oocities.com, largely because they give you a larger amount of space than most, 15 megabytes (15 million bytes.) This is enough for a sizable site with a lot of graphics.

1.      Go to the Geocities site: http://geocities.yahoo.com/home/

2.      Click on Build Your Web Site.

3.      If you already have a yahoo ID, such as if you have a Yahoo email account, go to the box that says I’m already registered with Yahoo and type in your ID and password. Otherwise, click Sign Me Up!

4.      Now you have to fill out the form above. The important thing here is that you must assign yourself an ID that no one else will have chosen, and you may also want to retain some anonymity. Then you give yourself a password, inputting it twice so as to minimize the possibility of typos. Make it something you’ll remember; I’d record both the ID and password and put them somewhere safe. For both of these: no spaces or special characters.

5.      The next section gives you some information they can use in case you forget your password.

6.      The last section allows you to choose some topics that Yahoo can send you information on.  This will put you on some mailing lists, but some people like that!

7.      Click Submit.

8.      You may have to try several times before you get it right!

9.      Now they want to know a general interest area under which your site would logically belong. Pick one.

10.  Finally, you’re ready to begin!

11.  Click Build your page now!

12.  You can use all the Wizard and tools that Yahoo gives you, but you won’t, because you spent all your money on this class and you can create HTML!  So you will click on File Manager.

13.  Click Open File Manager.

14.  You can create Subdirectories if you like or you can upload all your files into the same directory. Be sure to set it up just as your files were arranged on your hard drive. Otherwise, the links will all have to be changed.

15.  To Upload Files, click it!

16.  You can upload up to 20 files at a time by clicking the up button by Number of Files to Upload and clicking Display.

17.  Click the browse button by one file. Then find one of your files; continue till the boxes are full or you’re done. Click Upload Files.
