Web Page Design: Block-level Markup 01

In this section, we will examine in detail how to markup the various block-level elements in HTML. The following elements all start a new block:

• P - paragraph markup element
• H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6 - heading markup elements
• PRE - for preformatted text
• BLOCKQUOTE - for quoting a text passage
• ADDRESS - an address block
• DIV - for creating a layout section of similar styles
• UL, OL, DL - the various types of lists

Text flow normally starts from the leftmost pixel in the browser canvas and proceeds to the rightmost pixel, wrapping at the edge and a word break. As the browser window is re-sized, the browser will render the text again on the new canvas.

New blocks are typically preceded by a blank line.
