I wish that I were like a tree.

I wish that I were like a tree:
Strong, and growing steadily.
But instead, I'm like a flower,
Grown and gone in half an hour.
So if a flower I must be,
I'll be an orange blossom--part of a tree.
Then, though I myself will pass away,
My fruits will live, for another day.

(written on a summer morning, lying atop
my treehouse, looking through green leaves
at a deep blue sky that could no longer be
seen by the first family member I'd ever lost.)
