Star Gear Adjustment
================

The clearance between the Star Gear and its' plunger plate needs to
be adjusted properly. If they are not set right, you will have to
push the beater back into the harness frames to get the cams to
index. This will probably end up breaking the frames.

First, so we're on the same page. There is a 4-point gear on the
back of the cam machinery. This is called the star gear. There is also
a rectangular metal plate with a small rectangular hole in it. ( Ron
refers to this plate as the "plunger doo dad" :^)   When this
plate slides up and down, the rectangular hole engages with one of the points on the star gear. This is what index's the cams, etc.

There is another metal piece bolted to the wood near these.
(The backing plate).   It keeps the rectangular plate positioned
close to the star gear. If it is not positioned correctly, you will
end up slamming the beater into the harness frames because
you're trying to get the cam mechanism to engage.
(And probably end up beating the frames to pieces.).

Here is the advice that Ron Bushmen sent to me.

"There are two screws that are supposed to adjust the star gear backing plate, but they don't seem to work, I find there is always one point (on the star gear) that is a slight bit longer than the others,  move the gear to that point, loosen  the bolts slightly, and tap the plate with a hammer until the backing plate is snug against the face of the plunger doo dad, that operates the star gear, there is a raised portion on that thing right at the top, that makes the star gear move a bit to engage in the square hole, just make it snug, and it will work better, if you adjust it to one of the shorter points the long one will bind, mess with a bit you'll figure out what I mean  good luck"
