[ The Story of Project SpecWorks ]
Three months of planning is a long time just to select what I wanted in my first bike build project. The idea started with my regrown hunger for riding when Ben and I rode up at Arastradero Preserve (Palo Alto, CA) in the summer of 2001. At that time I was still riding a recreational bike with a rigid fork (a Specialized HardRock Sport). That bike is 10 years old in 2002. It's been good to me. Lots of dependable rides to and from Blue Hills Elementary and Miller Junior High. With a new ride I'll have equipment better suited to hit those trails and still double back to campus. Back to my story... it was time to replace my old bike and what better an experience than to build one by my own labors? After burning through $1700, I was quite satisfied with the results of my new XC mountain bike. Most components were used so I saved a bundle on a package with a retail value well over $2500. I am spending much more time on a bike now  than I have in years past on my last rig. What's the difference? What led to the change? Suspension! This is my first ever experience with a front-suspension fork. It's an amazing feeling going over bumps, significantly less harshness in my arms from road shock. I thought about getting a full suspension bike but I decided I needed the climbing control of a hardtail.
