2. At the second meeting that Ralph calls, the subject of fear is brought up. One of the littleuns says that he saw a beast on the island and everyone except a few of the boys become afraid. Ralph decides that the most important thing to have on the island is a fire so that any ships that pass by might see the smoke and will rescue them. Jack argues that meat is the most important thing on the island because they need to eat something.
3. Samneric are in charge of the fire on top of the mountain. While they are suppose to be taking turns watching the fire, they both fall asleep. When something awakes them, they see a man in a parachute caught in the tree. Samneric think this is the beast and run away down the hill to tell Ralph what they saw. Everyone becomes afraid and no one wants to go to the fire because the beast is there.
4. Everyone is afraid to go to the top of the mountain to see the beast. The fire is on top of the mountain so Ralph decides to make a new fire at the bottom of the mountain but is afraid that the ships may not see it unless they make a lot of smoke. The littluns are afraid that the beast will come down the mountain and get them.
5. Simon finally gets the courage to go to the beast and finds out that it is only a man in a parachute. He sits on top of the mountain for a while to think. The boys that are down by the fire and signing and dancing about killing the beast. The boys had killed a pig and sharpened both ends of the stick and stuck the pig’s head on one end of the stick and the other end of the stick into the ground. As Simon comes down the hill to tell the boys that there is no beast, the boys think that Simon is the beast. They attack him and end up killing him.
6. After the night of Simon’s death the boys except Ralph are in denial of killing him. Jack leaves the group because he wants to be leader but all of the boys want Ralph to be leader. Everyone follows Jack to join his group except for a few boys which stay with Ralph. The boys that stay with Ralph are Piggy, Samneric, and the littluns.
7. Jack and his crew need a fire to cook their meat. A few go along with Jack to where Ralph’s shelters are and steal Piggy’s glasses. Piggy and Ralph go to Jack to take the specs back and Piggy is pushed off of a cliff and is killed. Samneric are captured by Jack and are forced to join Jack’s tribe.
8. Ralph is all by himself and afraid because everyone has joined Jack’s group. Ralph hears Samneric at the top of the hill so he climbs up the mountain without making any sounds to make sure that no one sees him. Samneric tell Ralph to leave right away so that they do not get in trouble by Jack. Samneric tell Ralph that Jack is planning to hunt and capture Ralph the next day. Ralph tells Samneric where he is going to hide.
9. Ralph hides in a shrub that is low to the ground and if u tried to go into it, you would be tangled up in branches. So if someone tried to go into the shrub they would too be tangled in branches and helpless. Jack sits quietly through the morning and listens to the boys searching for him. Suddenly he hears a scream for Sam or Eric. The two boys had told Jack where Ralph is hiding.
10. Jack goes to the top of the mountain and throws down huge rocks down into the shrub to try to get Ralph to come out of the shrub other wise he will be crushed by the rocks. This tactic does not work, so Jack and the other boys start the shrub on fire hoping to scare Ralph out of the shrub that way.
11. Ralph becomes afraid of the fire and tries to sneak out of the shrub through the back. The boys see him and start to chase him across the island. Ralph hides into a small spot and the boys chasing him do not know where Ralph went and they ran right past him. Ralph gets out of that spot knowing he will be caught and goes to find a new spot.
12. Ralph thinks about hiding in a tree but then thinks that if he was spotted the boys would surly wait for him to come down. The shrub that Jack lit on fire is now catching the whole island on fire. It is becoming very dangerous for all of the boys. The boys are running around the island going crazy, not thinking, and trying to kill Ralph.
13. Ralph finds a new shrub to hide in. He again listens to the boys running around him, looking for him. Ralph can see feet stop right in front of the shrub and start to lean down to look underneath. Ralph becomes startled and does the first thing he can think of. He leaps out at the boy and attacks him. The boy falls and Ralph runs again to look for a new hiding spot.
14. While Ralph is running the boys spot him and start chasing him again. Ralph becomes even more scared than he was before. He trips and falls to the ground. In that second that he fell he can hear the boys coming closer and closer to him. Ralph believes that this is the end and he is captured and finally going to be forced to join Jack’s tribe.
15. As the boys come closer to him he looks up and sees a naval officer. The man says that they saw the smoke from when Jack put the island on fire. Ralph is saved from being captured and all of the other boys. All of the boys realize how they have been acting without grown-ups on the island. They all feel really bad for what has happened over the time on the island. Ralph remembers his good friends that have passed away on the island.
