I suspect that stress is more dangerous to our health than we know. In the modern world, there is a lot to be stressful over. Media gives wide coverage to stressful events, but rarely publicizes positive news. For example, every day we learn of some tragedy in Iraq, but rarely do we read an in-depth story about the good things that are happening in that country. Visitors, often reporters, when briefly interviewed after returning from Iraq, have much to say about the improvements we are bringing to the people of Iraq. These Iraqis, the vast majority, are grateful for our help. However, what we generally see on the news is the negative viewpoint, adding to our stress. We should most definitely limit the time we spend watching TV, and otherwise exposing ourselves to the news. News isn’t balanced, and it isn’t healthy in large doses. It is important to know the name of your president, however. Also, the imminent approach of huge asteroids should be noted.

Stress can be avoided, or at least minimized by thinking of and doing things that occupy minds and bodies. Exercise routines are good for both. Have your spouse or other close relative hide your dentures or eye glasses, requiring a long vigorous search, with lots of stretching and bending. Hobbies are great distractions from the negative effects of life. Music soothes the soul of the beast, and also reduces stress. Stay away from heavy metal, rap and hard rock. Yodeling is good.

If you’ve had children, it’s too late to warn against the inevitable stress involved there, but if you’re now a grandparent, it’s a good idea to MYOB and let the parents bear the brunt of the stress. You’ve already paid your dues, and probably shortened your life. What you don’t know won’t hurt you…until you learn of it.

Meditation is supposed to be helpful in escaping stress. You don’t have to join a cult to do this, nor do you have to maintain the lotus position. Simply relax and let pleasant thoughts run through your mind. Reading the proper book can also provide escape from stress, unless you are in poor lighting, and/or trying to balance an unwieldy snack on your lap at the same time. Avoid the Bible, because of all the violence and begetting, the contemplation of either being very stressful.

Forget those “do it yourself” projects, especially if instructions were printed in a foreign country. Syntax is always a problem, and you will inevitably become stressed when you can’t find the piece you already put in place elsewhere, where it is now inaccessible.

Writing nonsense is most satisfying in dispatching stress.
