Remember Pearl Harbor?

I find it very disturbing that many people seem so confused about the reasons for our being in Iraq. If they listened to the president’s speeches after the World Trade Center attack, they should recall that President Bush’s emphasis was on bringing the martial power of this nation to bear against terrorists, as well as against those who support terrorism. At the time, while 2800 human remains were being body bagged, the president had strong support for his promise of retaliation. It amazes me that so many people are now losing resolve. Often it is said that we didn’t find weapons of mass destruction. Is that reason to back off from our actions in Iraq? Does that mean that Saddam Hussein was a good guy after all? A good guy that filled over 300,000 graves?

It seems that a growing number of people are now against the war in Iraq. Why is this? It should be clear that there was every likelihood of weapons of mass destruction being in Iraq. Saddam Hussein had already used such a weapon against the Kurds in northern Iraq. Who can doubt that he would use other similar weapons, if he had them stockpiled. And there was growing certainty that he had such an inventory hidden away. It’s likely that these weapons are so well hidden that they may never be discovered. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist. It doesn’t take a very large space to hide enough chemical and biological agents to annihilate millions of people. Realize the Iraq is as large as the state of California, and hiding places are plentiful, to say the least.

Yes, our nation used the probability of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq as a means to sway many countries to support our efforts in Iraq. All is fair in love and war. It seems acceptable that we relied on intelligence reports to push this point. Have we been proven wrong? It’s not possible to prove that there are no deadly weapons hidden there. A negative can not be proven. Besides, terrorism is a worldwide threat, as has readily been demonstrated. If other nations needed their eyes opened, I see nothing wrong with a little nudge in our direction. It’s done all the time, and called "diplomacy".

To my way of thinking, whether or not Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction is not singularly relevant in our engaging Saddam Hussein in battle. Returning to the words of our president, words that we applauded after September eleventh, "…and those who support terrorism", we were well within our rights to retaliate against the Saddam Hussein regime. Who better could be singled out as a supporter of terrorism? Recall that he offered a $25,000 payment to any Palestinian who would become a human bomb against Israel. If that isn’t supporting terrorism, what is? Further, there were terrorist training camps found in northern Iraq. Is it likely that Saddam Hussein was oblivious to this fact? Knowing his history as a brutal tyrant, can any thinking person state that Saddam Hussein is not, himself, a terrorist, or that his evil henchmen are not terrorists? I said thinking person.

In summation, I suggest to all peace demonstrators in this country, as well as to all self-centered political candidates, who are intent on undermining the president’s efforts in Iraq (so that they may benefit personally), please grasp the reality of what this war is all about. We were attacked by terrorists. We are at war with terrorists and those who support them. Can it be any plainer than that?

This great nation rallied after the crippling sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. Even though the war was fought on two fronts, united in our purpose, we succeeded in globally defeating our foes. Can not all Americans see that the sneak attack on the World Trade Center merits the same united approach to defeating wide-spread terrorism?

Yes, there is a lot to remember about our response to Pearl Harbor.
