SMITH PREMIER NO. 2  (Will Davis collection)

This model was produced from 1895; the first Smith Premier appeared in 1889.  This example is s/n 72006 and was built in 1902.

This is an upstrike machine -- meaning that the type bars strike the bottom of the platen.  You cannot see what you're typing as you're typing it.  It also has a full double keyboard; the white keys are lower-case.

These machines were designed to keep their alignment (and not require adjustment) better than other contemporary machines, though the use of crank-operated type bar linkages -- a fairly unique design.
