Scott was about 5 minutes ahead of Douglas on the trail. When Doug came up on Scott he was watching a chipmunk "spasing" in the trail with a rattlesnake laying close by. It seems that the rattlesnake had bitten the chipmunk and was waiting for it to die. After about 10 minutes more the chipmunk died and the snake came back into the trail for lunch. All the time Doug and Scott was within ten feet of the action and the snake couldn't care less. They watched and photographed while the snake dined.
