The WAWLI Papers by J Michael Kenyon

WOMEN IN GAME DRAW STRANGLER LEWIS'S IRE

Los Angeles Times  --  June 25, 1937

Reprinted in The WAWLI Papers, Volume 2, Number 48

"It's terrible.   Wrestling has been bumped around long enough without being turned into a burlesque."   So yesterday did Ed (Strangler) Lewis deliver himself regarding the lady wrestlers now breaking into the game here.   The former champion sailed on the Matson-Oceanic liner Mariposa, bound around the world on a wrestling tour accompanied by his bride of five months, nee Bobbie West of Muskogee, Okla.   He plans 100 matches in the Antipodes, along the Indian Ocean and in South Africa, including a bout in the dirt, suma style, against Indian's undefeated Gama.

Note: Ed Lewis remained married to the former Bobbie West for over 29 years, or to the end of his life in August, 1966.
