Presentation of the CD on Water Resources of the Caribbean

This site is a demo of the CD compiled, edited and authored by Dr. Jasminko Karanjac, Professor and Chair in Water Resources Management (WRM) at the University of the West Indies. The project started as coursenotes for the course EM641 - Water Resources of the Caribbean Countries & Territories, as a part of the graduate programme in water resources management leading to an MSc degree in WRM. The course covered some 20 island countries. Twelve graduate students were assigned each to cover one or more additional islands, countries or territories. The total number of islands/countries or territories "interpreted" on the CD is now 35. The coverage spans the Latin and Central America from Surinam in the south to Belize in the north, all islands belonging to Lesser and Greater Antilles, plus Bermuda.

The CD has more than 230MB of recorded information with numerous links to more recent articles, especially to National or Country papers. Most but not all papers are totally reproduced on this CD. The author acknowledges permission to upload to this CD the recent work by the US Corps of Engineers, notably the series of reports titled "Water Assessment of ... " where dots stand for the name of a country. In describing water resources in several islands the original national reports prepared under an umbrella project “Integrating Management of Watersheds and Coastal Areas in Small Developing Countries of the Caribbean” have been used or linked as integral versions. National reports are dated April 2001. CEHI (the Caribbean Environmental Health Institute) granted permission to use its project’s outputs.

To use this CD you do not need to be connected to the Internet.

A typical country presentation includes the following:

The CD is available against prepayment of USD35. The CD shall be sent by regular airmail.

Click now on the CD label at the left to see the opening menu of the CD. On the real CD, a click on a country or its number opens up one or many files with information, data, graphics or maps. The only real-time and working example in this presentation is for Jamaica. Click on number 23 or the word Jamaica on the main menu, or on the satellite map of Jamaica, and follow the text, links or uploaded information. Once inside "Jamaica" you may branch to access thematic information. All other islands are blanked but navigation is similar to what is presented for Jamaica.

The author will appreciate feedback, especially from water resources authorities and professionals in the countries represented on this CD. Corrections, updates, additional links, papers, newsclips, etc. would grossly improve the usefullness of this CD. The author intends to make an update by the end of 2004.
