I was a huge fan of the Turtles when I was a kid. I had all of the toys, and I still have them somewhere around here. The games, excluding the first one, were pretty fun beat'em ups but the next generation oif Turtles is far from being as good as the original.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is based on the popular new show on Fox Box which I find to be complete crap. The story is... Wait, the game doesn't have a story. Each level basicly plays out as an episode, featuring stuff from the new cartoon which I think has some shoddy animation. It's nice to have the cartoon moments in there though but some of them are way too long and boring.

The graphics are cell shaded, and for the most part look good. However, at times they look pretty rough around the edges and it isn't always pretty. The levels look nice but when I was playing level 4 the entire thing had a horrible camera angle and everything looked so bland and boring.

The control is very basic and very easy to get the hang of. You have a special attack button, normal attack button, jump, shurken button and a dash button. It can't get any more simple than that.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the game uses the voices from the show which I only watched a few minutes of before changing the station because it was just that bad. Some of the voices sound normal while others don't. The music is really bad. The first level uses the music from the horrible theme song and I noticed in later levels there was different music but to be honest the music isn't noticable except in the first level. The sound effects are okay, but the one liners made me want to mute the game. You can only hear the same five things over and over so many times.

Well, At least Konami got the game play down, for the most part anyway. It's a 3D beat'em up but it feels more like a 2D game until you get to the fourth level where the camera gives you a view from the top and blocks a lot of your view most of the time, so you end up open to a ton of attacks from enemies you can't see. That's another problem, no more than five enemies ever appear on the screen at once, and they don't have the best AI. There also isn't much in the way of varity when it comes to the enemies. The levels are all split up into 5 or so areas. They can be anywhere from a minute to five minutes long and are fun in a mindless kind of way. The game features two player co-op which is cool, but only the first players character counts when it comes to secrets being unlocked, and the game has a fair amount of secrets. Another problem I had with the game was with the limited ways you could interact with your enviroments. Basicly you could blow up cars and hit fire hydrants during the first levels and the rest just had barrels, vases, and crates. The game also features a fighting mode but it's pretty weak and doesn't have a lot of options.

The replay value is decent. I mean, the game is fun for a short amount of time and you can play with a friend. The secrets aren't really worth while unless you're a die hard fan of the new cartoon.

In the end, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a worth while rental but not worth buying. If you own any of the old games, then just go play them because they are a lot better. If you're a fan of the new series then you just might enjoy this game but I could have lived without playing it.
