THE REGIMENTAL WARPATH 1914 - 1918
This
site was created from the information contained in my unpublished
book The Regimental Warpath 1914 - 1918.
The inspiration for the book came while trying to trace my
Great-Uncle Edward Gauton's First World War record. I knew
where he lived prior to the war, I knew when he was killed, but,
I was unable to find any record of him. I started by identifying
all the battalions raised in his local area, but to no avail. I
then identified all the battalions involved in the battle where
he was killed (Somme 1st July 1916). Still to no avail. The
Commonwealth Wargraves Commision were unable to help at this time,
they did however eventually find him through his next of kin. I
then discovered they had spelt his name wrong. I also discovered
he had yet another spelling in the volume of Soldiers died in the
Great War for the King's Own Scottish Borderers and at the National
Scottish War Memorial. I then thought if I needed this information
then perhaps so would other family historians, and the book was
born.
The
original book just followed all of the British Infantry battalions
from their pre-war locations or formation town through to the end
of the war, listing all the Brigades and Divisions they served with
and all the battles they fought in. Basically two big lists.
The web site however, will not only contain this information
but will also include the rest of the army units i.e. Artillery,
Engineers and all the other support units. It will also eventually
include all the Empire (as was) units. I also intend to add
a third linked list which contains all the battles and that will
link to the various divisions involved in each battle.
So
far I have been able to find five realtives who fought in the Great
War, they are listed below a link to a page about each of them will
be added soon.
