At Last!
News Has Come At Last To Say War Is Over.
Local Governments Agree to Full Disregard for War Pensioners.

In a momentous agreement, Sheffield City Council have agreed to provide Full Disregard to it's War Pensioners now, rather than wait to phase in the proposed change over a four year period.  This is a great achievement for all those who have campaigned against the unfair ruling.  The new ruling will become official at the beginning of this new year, 1999.

For years, local and nationwide campaigners have been fighting their councils to disregard war pensions when they are assessing war veterans rental and tax payments.  Sheffield Council had only disregarded the first £30 of a pensioners war pension while others in the nation had made the right choice in disregarding all of the war pension before calculating required council related payments.

The change by the council will benefit hundreds of war heroes who live within the council boundaries, who have been unfairly dealt with for over 10 years.  It's estimated the cost to the city would be £100,000

In an interview with a local newspaper, the leader of the council, Jan Wilson, admitted the phased plan would not have been suitable in light of the ages of those concerned.  Jan went on to mention how the British government had made it easier for the council to come to the decision.

While some celebrate in Sheffield, War Heroes in Barnsley are still fighting.  The Barnsley Council are still proceeding with their own four year phased plan and have announced that they have no plans to "speed up the process".

In a sad moment, WarHeroes members reflect upon those who have sadly missed this victory, and to those, we salute.

Decision has come too late for many.

"The wind of change in Jan Wilson's council turned to gale force when it announced the news that war veterans have waited so long to hear...the complete disregard of war disability pensions.  She is a lady true to her word.  Sadly, it came too late for many."

                                  Mrs. M. Hudson, Sheffield, S5.

The Remainder

The remaining councils who still have not offered full disregard to it's war disabled pensioners are listed below:

    Tynedale Weir Valley Barnsley Manchester
    Wakefield North Tyneside Easington Chester-Le-Street
    Derwentside South Tyneside Gateshead
    Sunderland Redcar&Cleveland

Barnsley and Wakefield are implementing a four year plan and are due to be ready to offer full disregard in April 2000.

Interact with WarHeroes

Many of our readers have expressed a desire to provide us with new or updated information and some have great ideas for articles, but one of the basic issues we have been faced with is the ease in which their contribution can be submitted to us. So, to make it easier for everyone to interact with us, we produced a feedback page with the help of our online landlord, GeoCities.

If you have anything you'd like to submit to us, then please click on through to our Feedback page.

We're particularly interested in hearing about any unfair treatment of war veterans, disabled or otherwise.

In addition, we're very keen to hear about your experiences during wartime or any stories a relative may have told you.   No one should ever condone war, but remember that the people who fought them were ordinary people with extra-ordinary commitments to fight for what they believed in.

WarHeroes hopes to receive information from ALL war veterans from different countries who fought in different wars.

So, please let us know your thoughts, your issues and your memories.
