Jackson Medical Center Hospital Volunteers

The goal of the Jackson Medical Center is to provide quality healthcare in partnership with their community, meeting the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of those they serve. We students are honored to be given the opportunity to help them in their goal by volunteering our time helping anywhere from the medical offices to the emergency room. We work at certain places in the hospital in one month intervals. Jackson High School is not the only school who participates, but we're the ones who made this website and I'm not going to advertise for rival schools. This program is headed by Ms. Candy Wilson.

The volunteers must meet several criteria in order to participate. The student must be in grades 10-12 and have a 3.5 GPA or better. Those wishing to participate must fill out an application, go though an interview process and write an essay. As of the 2005/2006 school year, there are 27 student volunteers, which is about the average. There is no known limit to how many can participate but generally varies year to year on how many apply.

Upon approval, the applicant must then meet several other requirements. Volunteers must devote at least two hours a week to the hospital and work in all assigned departments. They must also agree to abide by all the hospital practices and procedures. At the end of the year, volunteers are assessed and there are scholarship opportunities.

Here is a list of departments that the volunteers will be expected to work at:
  1. Urgent care clinic
  2. Business office
  3. Medical Records
  4. Materials management
  5. Nursing Services
  6. Lab
  7. X-ray
  8. ER
  9. Surgery
