1861 Census of Carlisle
LDS Film #0543206, #0543207

(Only Story/Storey Extracted)

These transcriptions are taken from hand written notes I took over 10 years ago.  As they are not really proper transcriptions so I have taken the liberty to add information that will hopefully help others to link the families.  Any corrections/additions are always welcome, Wanda Story

Census Date:  April 7th or 8th, 1861

A Note on Scholar entries:  Although you often find the word 'scholar' written in the occupation column, it only means that the child was of school age and is not proof that the child attended school, it was just an instruction to the enumerator to indicate children of school age who did not have an occupation!   Until the Education Acts of 1876 and 1880, which prohibited the employment of children under the age of 10 and children up to 13 were required to attend school (with some exceptions), there was no legal requirement for children to attend school.  The fees for attending, although sometimes only one penny per week, were too much for some poor families and in addition they would lose a possible wage.  Unless you find your child on a school roll or in a school admissions register he or she probably did not attend school.
