It certainly seems that way when I smell fresh apple pie or that chocolate cake that just came out of the oven. It seems that I never gave it a second thought, I just ate 1/2 a pie or 3 or 4 pieces of cake and enjoyed it. That was before I turned 40 or so. I began to notice that the belt was on it's last notch. Jeans size 32 were no longer an option and 36 felt better than a 34.. Finally,  time spent fishing and hunting or running with a  canoe on my back was only reflected in days gone by while looking at slides of the catch or scenery of moose covered with lilly pads in a stream. It wasn't till after I had retired and got a new pair of jeans size 38 that I began taking a serious look at actually doing something about the paunch.--I was NOT going to buy a longer belt!

I would recommend that no one follow my dietary program. I did look at a few recommended diets, but they were all for the birds - and I do mean that literally. Most dietitians I've run across are skinny, twiggy looking things which don't even turn my head as they walk by. Now a full course meal that I can wolf down in 2 fork jabs and leave my stomach growling for the next 4 hours isn't my idea of a satisfying snack let alone dinner.
I eat more sensibly now. A light breakfast of a couple of eggs and 2 to 3 sausages, 2 slices of toast with Kraft peanut butter and (home made) jam or  honey - two or so large mugs of Arabica bean coffee and only skim milk - 2% is fattening.
My sons now keep me in  moose and deer - pepperoni and salami. It tastes even better knowing that those years spent in the wilds with my 3 sons paid off - (I taught them everything they know - ha!).
Choices are imperative to our survival. "I read that somewhere".
Natural supplementation.
So what is the answer? Foremost, -information & knowledge..
Mild exercise and good eating habits are a first priority to weight management.
We use a mini-trampoline which can be placed on the floor in your TV room and easily accessable.  We do a sprightly "walk" on it for about 300 steps 3 to 5 times per day.  It is far easier on the joints than pounding on pavement for a mile or 2.

I still haven't reached my weight in the 40's but I can no longer wolf down half a chicken.
