Best of the Internet Class - (Using IE7)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR STARTING YOUR COMPUTER

We are using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) browser and because of the way our SeniorNet computers are set up, it is necessary when you come to the “Best of the Internet” class to perform the following 4 steps – which must be repeated each week.

If you have IE7 at home, you should also perform them at home but you need do it there only once. (If you do not have Internet Explorer Version 7 at home, you can download IE7 or IE8 from: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx )

1 - Open the Microsoft IE7 Browser by double clicking on the icon on the desktop.

2 - Click on the tools icon near the upper right corner of the page, then if there is NOT a check

mark next to “Menu Bar”, click it and you will place one there.

Your IE7 browser should now have a “Menu Bar” with the following functions:

“File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, Help”

3 - Click on “Tools” in the “Menu Bar” which you now have and then on “Internet Options”.

Then click on “Settings” to the right of the word “Tabs”.

a) Make sure the top two boxes are checked and then check the third box

(“Always switch to new tabs when they are created”),

b) Under “When a pop-up is encountered”, click on the button reading

“Let Internet Explorer decide how pop-ups should open.”

Then click on “OK”, then on “OK” again.

4 - In the address box, type the class address - www.wallyfant.org – and press “Enter”.

Click on “Favorites” in the recently opened “Menu Bar”.

From the drop down window, click on “Add to favorites”.

In the “Name:” box in the new pop-up window,

type in “Best of the Internet” and click “Add”

We will also perform these 2 steps later in the class but you may also do them now or anytime.

A -To add search engine options, click on the tiny triangle to the right of the eyeglass

in the upper right corner.

Click on “Find More Providers”, then on your choices of search engines and, after

each one is selected, click on “Add Provider”.

B -To set the default search engine (eg. Google), click on the tiny triangle to the

right of the eyeglass in the upper right corner.

Click on “Change Search Defaults”.

Choose your preferred search engine, then on “Set Default”, then on “OK”.
