Springfield "Friends of Sheltie Rescue"

"We can't save them all, but we can save THIS one!"
Updated Nov 8, 2003
We are sorry to announce that as of November 8, 2003, the Springfield "Friends of Sheltie Rescue" is closed and no longer accepting rescues.

Unfortunately, Gregg was unable to find a job in the Springfield area. Hw has accepted a job on the East Coast. Therefore, we are moving out of state sometime after the first of the year.

We highly recommend that you contact SW MO K-9's for any rescue assistance that you need.

Regretfully,
Gregg & Nancy Bender

Our primary mission is to backstop the Southwest Missouri Humane Society to prevent adoptable Shelties from euthanization. We primarily rescue from the Humane Society Shelter, as it's the only kill-shelter in our area. We only adopt Shelties who are not otherwise adopted out by the Humane Society Shelter and are facing euthanization. We will consider other Shelties on a case-by-case basis, if we have care available. Since opening in January 2003, we have saved 13 Shelties from "Death Row."  We are a totally volunteer, not-for-profit operation, based in Springfield, MO. Please click here to meet our rescues so far!

We are just two people with no funding and no facilities. We just save Shelties anyway. We accept donations of equipment, supplies, offers to short-term foster Shelties, veterinary care, or gift cards for supplies. Please click
here for our current Wish List.

All Shelties we rescue are put in short-term foster care until transportation can be arranged to
Second Chance Sheltie Rescue or The Senior Dog Project in St. Louis, MO. We operate under the aegis of Second Chance Sheltie Rescue and The Senior Dog Project of St. Louis.

SHELTIE RESCUE NEWS, Oct 26, 2003:
Our #13 rescue didn't make it. We discovered that he was in advanced renal failure and was severely anemic, mostly due to his advanced age and a massive infection in his muzzle from his teeth. He was in a lot of pain, and there was strong doubt that he would survive the dental surgery that he needed to live. We sent "Buddy" to the Rainbow Bridge tonight, where he waits for us. I held his paw and scratched his ears as he took his final nap in my arms. I find myself grieving for him powerfully, even though I only knew him for a week. I also find myself extremely angry at whoever let him get into such terrible condition. At least, he was loved and cared for for a week of his life. Pictures are on the
"Our Rescues" page.

We could use one or two good foster-homes in the Springfield, MO area.. Please contact us, if you interested.

We have just listed in Southwest Missouri on
