Seoul City.. at a Glance!
Established in 1392, when King T'aejo founded the Yii Dynasty, Seoul has remained the political, commercial and cultural capital of Korea. Before the modern era, suprisingly enough, Seoul was called Hanyang. Actually, the word 'Seoul' is endemic to the Korea Peninsula, and it simply means capital. Because the word is native to Korea it cannot be written in Chinese Calligraphy.

Today Seoul is a collossal megapolis, it said to be the sixth largest city in the world. It is divided in two by Han Gang (the Han River), and fortunately most of the interesting sites are north of the Han River, in Chongno-Gu. Undoubtedly the cities major drawcard, apart from the historic gates and the wonderful intoxicating markets, is Chongno-Gu. The only real part of Seoul that miraculously survived Korea's turmultuous and destructive history with Japan, and the absolute flattening of Seoul that was the Korea War in 1950.
Below are pictures taken of significant places and colourful people in CHONGNO-GU.
