Indonesia - Britain holds Conflict Resolution seminar
JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Defense in cooperation with the British Embassy held
here on Tuesday a one-day seminar on conflict resolution, featuring civilian experts
and security figures from both countries.
The seminar was part of Indonesia-Britain cooperation on the security sector reform.
Minister of Defense Matori Abdul Djalil addressed the session as well as Coordinating
Minister for Political and Security Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and British
Ambassador Richard Gozney.
Presenting their views on various cases of conflicts and peacekeeping efforts in
strife-torn areas such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and on the IRA in Northern
Ireland were Gen. (ret) Sir Michael Rose, former director of the Special Forces with
operational responsibility for both the SAS and the Royal Marine's SBS, and Kirsten
Schulze, a senior lecturer for International History from the London School of
Economics.
Assistant chief Constable Stephen White of the Northern Island Police Service also
talked on the relations between the police, the military and their stakeholders.
"We hope this seminar will give a wider perspective in conflict resolution, and
Indonesians can learn a lot about it, especially in facing complex problems of regional
conflicts such as separatism movements in Papua and Aceh as well as
communal-religious conflicts such as in Maluku and Poso," British envoy Richard
Gozney said.
