District Maluku Utara to be split up
Plans are being made to split the present day district of Maluku Utara in the province
Maluku Utara into four new districts: Sula and South-, West- and North Halmahera
districts. Morotai will become a free trading zone. The team II of the DPR that just
finished its tour around the islands, will discuss the matter with the minister of Home
Affairs. If there are objections from the department, parliament will come with its own
proposals.
Acting governor Sarundajan has said he could understand the aspirations of the
people of Morotai. Morotai is the most northern island in Indonesia and lies at the
Pacific Rim. Because of the fighting that went on during World War II, the island has
potential for tourism, especially for American visitors.
