Indonesia government bans Australian journalist
The Indonesian Government has banned an Australian journalist reporting from
Indonesia.
The correspondent for the Age and the Sydney Morning Herald newspapers, Lindsay
Murdoch has been refused an extension of his journalists visa.
While no official reason has been given Mr.Murdoch was told two reports in particular
had upset important people.
In one report he quoted people in strife-torn Aceh province, describing how soldiers
had poured boiling water over a 4 month old baby. The baby died.
A second series of stories described how East Timorese children had been taken
from refugee camps in West Timor and left in orphanages on Java.
Both the Australian government and Lindsay Murdoch's employer Fairfax Ltd have
appealed agaisnt the decision.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has also raised the matter.
