Erwin T. Holcomb was born March 5, 1908. In January 1923 at age 14, he applied to the Radio Service of the Department of Commerce' Bureau of Navigation for a General Class Amateur Radio License. Erwin would not be allowed to broadcast news, weather, music or any other commercial type broadcasts. He was also not allowed to broadcast evenings between 8 and 10:30PM or on Sunday’s during local Church Services. This Amateur Radio License was granted on January 15, 1923 and had a two year expiration.

A year later Erwin applied for and was granted a Radio Operator Amateur Second Grade License dated January 16, 1924. Erwin also applied to the ARRL in December 1924 to become an Official Relay Station and was issued Certificate No. 142 American Radio Relay League Official Relay Station in the Pacific Division on December 29, 1924.

Erwin T. Holcomb became a Silent Key in May 1979. We thought Erwin continued his haming into the 40s and 50s but it seems he has gotten himself lost in the 1930s. I find his call listed in the 1933 call book but found his W6CCY call had been reissued in the 1950s. So any help in finding our subject will be appreciated. Erwin’s grandson is Rick McMorran N0VLF of Colorado Springs, CO. Thank you Rick for sharing your Grandfather with us.

Now, take a few minutes and read the fine print of these Amateur Radio Historical Documents from the 1920s.
