A Bird Named Goldilocks
- Bronze,
38" (base diameter) x 20" (top diameter) x 20"
height
- A Bird Named Goldilocks (top
detail)
The Rook
- The
bronze rook is 16" x 25" and sits on a corner of the chess board,
6' x 6' x 27" height, bronze, paving stones and
wood.
Each of the four dogs in the castles windows
makes some reference to a fairy tale or is keeping with the fairy
theme. The afghan with the hair going down to the bottom refers to
Rapunzil. I also include a cocker spaniel in a shoe wth two puppies (
the old woman in the shoe) and a dog with a slipper in his mouth.
(Cinderellas's prince)
The bone hanging from the door at the bottom
says "Ruff Ruff". The two dogs on top on are enaged in a game of
chess. For those who know the game, will mean something. The Rook is
a wonderful introduction to the game of chess for young children and
offers older children an opportunity to learn and teach
others.

The above ground world represents our
conscious world and the bottom the world
of the imagination. Below ground level are
sculptures from 20th century. It is also
meant as a teaching tool and fun for those who
recognize the references. The details
such as the cat or rabbit are not directly
meant to represent the characters in the story
but rather how we can take from our "everyday
reality" and give it a new life through
fiction or the visual arts. Charles Ludwig
Dodson (Lewis Carroll) did just that when
he made up the stories for four year old Alice
Liddell who was the daughter of a
colleague.
