Shanghai
In mid-January, I joined Jenny for one of her business trips to Shanghai. We stayed with her college friend, Ying, who lives in the new Pudong section.
We started our travels at the Yuyuan bazaar, one of the biggest tourist attractions in Shanghai, but still a beautiful setting.
Probably the best known landmark in the bazaar is the famous Bridge of Nine Turns, in the background. Ying's daughter, Mia, looks like she's trying to hear the baby, but she's probably just being goofy, as usual.
This tea house sits at the center of the bridge and boasts a long list of recent famous guests, including Bill Clinton.
More silliness with Mia, here at Nanjing Road, the most popular and brightly lit shopping street in China.
After an evening walk along the Bund, we stopped at the Peace Hotel to see the act they call the oldest performing jazz band in the world. The setting was terrific, which is the best thing I can say about it. If practice makes perfect, these guys may need another 100 years or two.
Of course, part of Shanghai's attraction is its massive and rapid development in recent years. The Shanghai Urban Planning Center, located in the People's Square, is a museum and propaganda forum to document this development. It contains this gigantic scale model of the city, which covers over 5000 square feet.
This overhead view shows where the Huangpu river cuts through the center of the city. The landmark Pearl TV tower is located on the right (east) side, just at the bend. The Bund is directly across from that.

The inset picture shows the Pearl tower, as seen from the Bund on a nice day (picture stolen from National Geographic).
