Father is Killed Accidentally in Hunting Accident

Edgar Shannon Loses Life On Farm In Fork Community

Another of life's tragedies brought sorrow to a farm-tenant family in Boyle County today when the father, Edgar Shannon, about 45, accidentally shot and killed himself while hunting foxes with two of his sons, Alva and Lewis, boys of about 15.

It was the first hunting fatality in Boyle county this year. It occurred about 6 o'clock this morning on the farm of R.T. Ellis, where Shannon lived with his family.

According to Sheriff Gilbert I. White, who investigated the accident, Shannon apparently attempted to cross a fence with a loaded 12-gauge shotgun in his hands. It is believed he stumbled or lost his footing and fell, causing the gun to discharge. The shot from the gun struck him full in the chest.

The two boys, who had sighted a fox and gone around a field to head it off heard the shot and rushed to their father's side, only to find him mortally wounded. The father died a few moments later.

The boys were on the other side of the hill and could not see how the accident happened, it was said. Coroner, J.W. Edwards, conducted an inquest this morning, and the jury's verdict was accidental caused by the discharge of a shotgun. The jury was composed of Howard Overstreet, foreman, Beeler Whitlock, Arch Hafley, R.T. Ellis and Ike Ellis.

Shannon is survived by his wife, other sons besides Alva and Lewis, and a number of grandchildren.

Aunt Daisy Connie Hickey : Wednesday, April 12, 2000

When our Mom had to go to the hospital for an operation or for having a baby. I'm not sure which it was. Aunt Daisy came to stay with us and take care of us 6 kids. That was a big job for her to take on. I know everyone of us loved her with all of our hearts. She was so special. There are three things I remember most about her being there. Her cookies she made in a roll and put in the refrigerator before she cut and baked them. Her combing out her very long hair before she went to bed. And her reading her Bible and praying before she went to bed.

Grandma told me a story one time: And WE ALL KNOW THAT GRANDMA WAS SENSIBLE AND DOWN TO EARTH. She said she was out in the garden, I believe she was on her knees weeding. She said she was worried about Daisy because she was sick and was praying for her as she worked. Grandma said she heard a voice say out loud to her; "DON'T WORRY ABOUT HER, SHE IS MINE." It must be a very wonderful thing to know for a certainty from a very reliable source that someone you love so much is in a much better place than this world after they leave it.

Young and Old Alike (Feature Story - By Gloria Cummins)

Checkers or Draughts is a favorite game of Americans requiring a red and black board and twenty-four pieces called men. The careful planning of moving men pieces which will put the opponent on the defensive is the main objective of the game.

While talking with Lewis Shannon and Phillip Carmicle I found out that checkers are a favorite pastime of men in our plant. At noon or after working hours these men and a small crowd can be seen at their checker board in deep concentration.

Lewis and Phillip give credit for their knowledge of the game to their fathers. Both men learned at a small age as their fathers played with relatives in their homes.

Phillip has been with GENESCO for seven years (edited).

Lewis is a member of our Maintenance Department. He says he spends weekends and holidays playing checkers at a local service station in Gravel Switch, where he and his wife Mildred, and their two children live. He is also the proud grandfather of a baby girl named Becky.

With a grin, Lewis admits "I sure have trouble finding competition for a game. if the competition is poor, I usually get careless and sometimes lose." The longest game both can remember lasted about 35 minutes and their best competitors are William Powell, from the Packing Department, and Jesse Goens, from the Engineering Department. They feel like the interest in checkers is growing and hope to work up a Checker Tournament in the future. Good luck, men!

Some residents get free smoke alarms

Long-life devices are designed to be maintenance-free

By SHANNON TANGONAN, The Courier-Journal

A free, long-life smoke detector doesn't sound like a tough sell.

But teams going door to door yesterday to install the detectors, which have 10-year lithium batteries, met some resistance in western Louisville.

One elderly woman was suspicious of the free offer, fearing someone might come by later to ask for money.

A man said he didn't know if the long-lasting devices were any better than the ones powered by nine-volt batteries already up on his walls.

The teams were made up of city workers from Louisville Fire & Rescue and the city Neighborhoods Department, as well as volunteers with Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse. Their goal is to install the devices in about 750 homes by the end of next Tuesday, said Maj. William Bowman of the fire department.

By day's end, about 100 had been installed, he said.

Under an ordinance passed in July, the maintenance-free smoke alarms are now required in city dwellings. The lithium batteries cannot be replaced; the homeowner must buy a new detector after 10 years.

Many fire authorities throughout the country recommend replacing the older alarms every 10 years, too.

While some homeowners didn't think twice about the offer, team members had to convince others that no strings were attached.

When they were successful, it was gratifying.

"It's nice to help people who really want it," said Ronnie Shuck, 38, a Lowe's worker who had just installed a smoke alarm in the home of Columbus and Odester Peterson near the corner of 23rd and Kentucky streets. Shuck is a member of Lowe's Heroes, a volunteer group.

Shuck had teamed up with Angela Auter of the Department of Neighborhoods and Maj. Tim Hall of the fire department.

Columbus Peterson, 67, questioned whether having to buy another smoke detector after 10 years was a good deal. Hall told him it was.

"This is the latest technology," Hall told him. "You don't have to worry about batteries."

Peterson then agreed, saying the smoke detectors in his home often start beeping. "When my wife cooks breakfast it goes off anyway," he said.

Auter said that if the homeowners who refused the detectors want to reconsider, they can notify CityCall, a city service line. A fire department official will come by and install the device, she said.

The city purchased the smoke detectors at a discount from Lowe's. The retail price is about $25 each. Lowe's also has donated $4,500 to the effort, said Jeff Magner, a manager at the Fern Valley Road store.

Boyd, who presented the awards, said they will be presented to the "lay person or persons who have exemplified and shown their talents in improving the quality of life and education and in furthering the goals of their school system. School Winners Devote Time, Effort

By Linda Gordon, Staff Writer

"I think there are many things that parents can do that a school system can't."

These are the words of Virgie Johnson, one of five local residents who received a Big Apple service award Thursday from the Danville - Boyle County Chamber of Commerce.

Mrs. Johnson, Deborah Eckler, Linda Farmer, Lana Little and Helen Joyner were presented the awards in recognition of their service to the local school systems. This is the first y-ear for the Big Apple Award, which is to be presented annually to a lay person who has contributed considerable time and talent to help improve and maintain the quality of education in the Boyle, Danville and Kentucky School for the Deaf systems.

A homemaker, Mrs Johnson devotes much of her free time to work at Mary G. Hogsett Elementary School. "It was a gradual process; I wasn't really all that involved at first," she said. Now, six years later, Mrs. Johnson is very involved. A former president of the Parent-Teacher Organization and now treasurer of the same, Mrs. Johnson has also been a homeroom mother and homeroom mother chairman. During her two years as President, she headed the annual Halloween carnival, which is the biggest single fund raiser of the school year.

"By working in the school have gotten to know my children's teachers well and feel very comfortable with them. I can talk to them as a friend and that kind of relationship is very special because teachers have as much influence on our children's lives as we do," said Johnson.

"My girls (Becky, now in sixth grade at Bate and Karen, a fourth grader at Hogsett, like to see mommy at school," said Johnson. "The schools are very receptive to parent involvement, too" she said.

"I don't feel that I'm special. I do things at the school because I enjoy it. I am by far not the only one who does this sort of thing. I think if more parents became involved they would get a great deal of satisfaction too," said Mrs. Johnson.

The wife of J.W. Johnson, Mrs. Johnson was instrumental in organizing the Great Books program at Hogsett and led the group of academically talented fourth and fifth graders throughout the 1980-1981 school year.

She has represented Hogsett on the Adults for Danville Schools (ADS) Council for the past three years and is currently serving as chairman for the system wide council.

People By Sallie Bright

Virgie Johnson has never been the type to sit around twiddling her thumbs. So even though she doesn't hold a full-time job, she puts in plenty of hours working.

"I'm not the kind of person who likes to sit and look at four walls all day, yet I want to be available for my children,' she says.

Volunteer works suits Johnson's schedule - and provides many rewards for her.

"Sometimes volunteers wonder why they're here," says Johnson, who is co-chairman of volunteer for the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center's auxiliary. She says she never questions her reasons. "Once you get really involved, you don't have time to wonder. It's a feeling of helping people, contributing to the community in which you live."

A member of the auxiliary for about five years, Johnson also does volunteer work for the Red Cross, is vice president of Boyle County's homemakers and edits the Danville High School newsletter for parents, which is published about every six weeks.

She puts in three or four hours at the hospital gift shop and reception desk each week, and schedules other volunteers on the personal computer at her home on Lisa Avenue.

"When somebody volunteers, we try to get their talents connected with the right service," she says.

During National Volunteer Week this week, Johnson is trying to make people aware of what volunteers contribute and how rewarding non-paying jobs can be. (April has also been proclaimed Kentucky Volunteer Awareness Month.)

"The general conception is of a little old lady whose family is gone. That's not true. There's no classic description of a volunteer."

Some volunteers are young enough to be Johnson's daughters. In fact, one daughter, Karen, a high school sophomore, does volunteer work at the hospital. Johnson and her husband, Jay, have another daughter, Becky, who is a senior.

Johnson, who works part-time as a bookkeeper, says she first got involved in volunteer work with the PTO when the girls were young. "It just kind of evolved."

Now, she's always on the lookout for people who want to give a little of their time. "We can always use more volunteers."

A whopper (caption under picture) Mike Shannon is shown with the 50-pound, 51-inch Dolphin Fish he caught off the coast of the Grand Bahamas

I ran into Mike Shannon at Video Vault. He wanted to show me a picture of a fish he'd caught.

His catch was nothing I'd ever seen before but I knew it didn't come from a local farm pond.

Mike told me it was a Dolphin Fish he'd caught at the end of March fishing from a charter boat off the coast of the Grand Bahamas.

It took him 45 minutes to land the 50-pound, 51-inch fish.

There must have been quite a few fillets!

Kathy Shannon wins Ashland Teacher Achievement Award

Marie Moffitt - Staff Writer

Kathy Shannon was given an apple for being an outstanding teacher.

The St. Augustine teacher was nominated and evaluated on information sent in to the Ashland Inc. Teacher Achievement Award.

"I was very surprised and honored when I found out I was nominated," she said. "Someone must have thought I was worth the nomination."

The nomination, which was the second for Shannon helped her become a 1997 Golden Apple Achiever Award winner.

"I commend Ashland for the need to honor and recognize the work that educators do," she said.

Shannon was recognized for her teaching excellence based on teaching material, teaching methods, philosophies and a clear concern for individual student needs.

Out of 6,270 teachers in four states only 769 nominations were submitted to judges.

The top 15 percent, 84 teachers, was awarded the Golden Apple award.

"People don't know how many hours go into the teaching profession. You have to love it and the children to put in hours and hours," she said. "It's not a 9 to 5 job."

The Ashland Inc. Teacher Achievement Award covers Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio and West Virginia and recognizes 10 teachers in each state.

The program has been in all states for nine years and all certified and regular classroom teachers are eligible.

Nominated teachers are sent a package of information which has to be returned after being filled out.

The judging is conducted by former Teacher Achiever winners, teachers and experts from the education field in all states.

Shannon received her recognition after working in the field of education for many years.

She received a bachelor's degree from Spalding University and a master's degree from Western Kentucky University.

She also has a master's catechist certificate in religion. The degree is offered by the Archdiocese in Louisville.

Shannon has taught at St. Francis of Assisi for eight years, St. Catherine Elementary in New Haven for one year and St. Augustine for five years.

"I have taught every grade K through six," she said.

Since July 1, she was given the position as coordinator of Lifelong Formation and Education for the St. Augustine Parish.

"My new job is a big umbrella over lots and lots of other things," she said.

In her new position, Shannon is in charge of adult education, religion classes, the high school youth, and the Sacraments.

"You name it, I got it, Bible school, child liturgy; any religious activity," she said.

Shannon is currently working on youth and grade school religious programs for the fall.

"I'm real excited and looking forward to filling a learning need that's here about our Catholic faith," she said. "There's a definite need for the position."

Shannon stays active with the church and volunteers her time to the community.

She has taught religious classes at night, has been a Eucharist minister for eight years and for 10 years she has been in charge of the math-a-thon which raises money for St. Jude's Children Research Hospital.

"We usually raise around $4000 to $5000 a year," she said.

Shannon has volunteered her time to the community in helping with 4-H Camp, the Marion County Fair in the past years and Marion County Ham Days.

When she finds spare time, she likes to read, go horseback riding and she walks or jogs almost everyday.

"I do find time to read and I'm pretty consistent on waling or jogging," she said.

Shannon is married to Mike Shannon and they have three children Katie, Michael and Stephanie.

Even with her new job she will continue to teach.

"It's a broader field of teaching, not only will I be teaching children but other people about teaching," she said.

"I love teaching and I love to see people learn, it will be a different field," she said.

Shannon setting new standards for leadership

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Michael Shannon of Raywick has been selected to attend The National Young Leaders Conference from Feb 12 - Feb 17 in Washington, D.C.

The NYLC is a unique leadership potential and scholastic merit.

Shannon will be among 350 National Scholars from around the county to attend the conference.

The theme of the NYLC is The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today. Throughout the six-day conference, Shannon will interact with key leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the media and the diplomatic corps.

Highlights of the program include welcoming remarks from the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives and a panel discussion with prominent journalists at the National Press Club.

Shannon will also meet with a senator, representative or an appointed member of their staff to discuss important issues facing the nation.

"It's wonderful that high school students like Michael Shannon seek out the National Young Leaders Conference in an effort to learn and take on leadership roles in communities throughout our country," said Michael Lasday, executive director of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, the organization that sponsors the NYLC.

"More than ever, the events of Sept. 11 have prompted the urgent need to understand and exercise effective leadership. Those who participate in this program not only gain knowledge and experience in the nation's capital, they leave with a sense of accomplishment and an increased ability to face the challenged of the future."

To complement the schedule of special meetings and briefings, Shannon will also participate in a number of leadership skill-building activities.

In one role-play activity known as If I were President, students act as the president and cabinet members responding to an international crisis. Students also participate in a judicial simulation called Testing the Constitution, in which they examine an actual Supreme Court case. The NYLC culminates with the Model Congress, in which scholars assume the roles of U.S. Representatives, and debate, amend and vote on proposed legislation.

The CYLC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan education organization. Founded in 1985, it is committed to fostering and inspiring young people to achieve their full potential. Over 425 members of the U.S. Congress join this commitment by serving on the CYLC Honorary Congressional Board of Advisors. Each year, 7,000 select, outstanding youth nationwide participate in the 20 sessions of the NYLC.

Morgeson earns second

Stephanie Shannon wins St. Augustine poetry contest

Winner of the St. Augustine School Ham Days Poetry Contest was Stephanie Shannon, an eighth-grade student at the school. Second place went to Jill Morgeson, a sixth-grade student.

Their poems follow.

Ham Days

As I walk through the streets and see so many familiar faces

I realize that I am no longer a child looking for toys but a teen looking for people.

Even though our town is not big

You would not believe it if you down Main Street on Ham Days

Every where I look there are family, friends, and even some strangers.

However on the days of Ham Days they are no longer strangers but part of the Marion County public family

Everyone is here for a different reason, buying and eating different things, meeting different people

One has a purchase, one is with his child, one is with a date and one has food.

There are many different kinds of stands, face painting, crafts, T-shirts, movies and more

As I meet my friends at one, we start looking, not only for things but friendly faces as well.

Now as we clear the streets the representatives of Marion County come rolling by

The parade has begun

As people walk, run, ride or dance by

Everyone watching looks frozen in movement, but the sound is momentous

In moments I begin to feel lost

But in others I have never felt more at place

The things that I have done with my friends on these days shall never be forgotten

Because the streets of Marion County shall carry out memories forever.

----- By Stephanie Shannon

Speakers urge fellow DHS graduated to work for dreams (excerpt)

Danville's Class of 1990 was told Friday to remember its accomplishments and look to the future.

The five students who won the honor of addressing their classmates offered philosophical musings, remembered times worth laughing about and urged the class to continue striving. "Shoot for the moon because even if you do not succeed, you will be among the stars," said Cheryl Lewis, senior class president.

The graduation addresses were given by Lewis, Coletta Frye, president of the student council; and Heather Hankla, Karen Johnson and Mary Jurgensen, class scholars, who are those seniors with the highest grades based on difficulty of courses taken.

Johnson said that learning to overcome a speech difficulty taught her the importance of support from faculty, parents and friends. She said the best way for the students to show gratitude to those who had helped them was to reach out and help others.

Johnson spends spring break in the 'ghetto'

The following story was written by Emily Morse and appeared in the Danville Advocate-Messenger

Karen Johnson spent her spring break from college in what she described as a "wall-to-wall ghetto."

The 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Kentucky sacrificed getting a tan to clean and paint a convent in Camden, N.J. This summer, the convent will house church workers who will aid disadvantaged children in Camden.

Johnson, a graduate of Danville High School and the daughter of Jay and Virgie Johnson of Danville, learned about the project of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education through the United Methodist Student Center. She lives in the United Methodist Student Center's dormitory, the Wesley Foundation. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Murphy of Lebanon and the late Louis (sic Lewis) Shannon.

Johnson had done mission work before with her church, Calvary Baptist Church, but the trip she made this summer ranks as the most intense. She traveled with a group of 18, including the campus minister.

With 47 percent of Camden's population 18 or younger, it is a city of "children having children," Johnson said. "All the males over 15 carry guns and all the girls carry knives." she said.

Cleaning the building that the church had leased to families in the area was not easy. "The convent was really trashed," recalled Johnson, who earned the nickname of "pooper scooper."

To enter the church where they stayed, they went through a gate, two locked doors, another gate and an alarm. "They told us not to feel safe while we were there," she said.

In addition to the dirty work, Johnson worked with the children in the after-school program. "Most of these kids have nothing. They have nothing to hope for except to live for the next day," Johnson said. One fourth-grade girl said her career ambition was "not to be a drug dealer," Johnson said.

Johnson helped pave the way for change. "In the summer, they try to get kids to see that there's more to life that what they see in Camden, which is mainly drugs," she said. "Just to give them hope is the main thing."

Notes for JENIFER LEE ORT:

A Family Tree

I hear the Holy Spirit

saying to me

life is a gift

it grows like a tree

Look at a tree and tell me

What do you see?

I see some thing strong that cannot easily be blown away

I see it blow with the breeze on a cold blustery day

I see it's leaves change into colors so fair

I see and hear the baby birds from the branches way up there

I see more than a broken branch or two

I see a great strength God has given me and you

The strength to live in a season we all must go through

The strength to be broken and grow anew

This strength comes from standing there and never backing up

This strength grows from year to year it tends to make us tough

When I look at a tree I see gentleness as the leaves sway in the wind

and I see a big strong branch that when pulled on can still bend

I see us in this tree I guess you could say

Because it reminds me of our family we are just that way

A strength year round full of wisdom and love

able to extend our branches to harbor a dove

A beautiful sight not just on the surface

but ones that stand tall with dignity and purpose

This tree could never be hewn down

because through many generations it has stood it's ground

It's roots came from a Father and a Mother

It's branches embrace a sister and a brother

It's leaves reveal our love for one another

So today may we be as birds of a feather

and enjoy our time of flocking together

and hide under our wings this truth that's free

One of life's greatest gifts is a FAMILY TREE.
