Tourists unfazed by travel warnings

MANILA – Philippine tourism continues to sizzle despite low international ratings.

In a report by Pacific Strategies and Assessments (PSA), a leading risk consultancy group, the Philippines was touted as Asia’s “kidnapping hotspot.” The report cited weak rule of law, rampant corruption and ineffective law enforcement as the major factors that earned the Philippines this infamous tag.

Despite this, the Philippine Department of Tourism said last week that the country actually exceeded its target of 2.6 million inbound visitors last year.

In its final report for 2005, the DoT said the country welcomed an all-time high of 2,623,083 arrivals, which is 14 percent higher than the previous year’s total of 2,291,352.

Tourism Undersecretary Eduardo Jarque credited “intensified marketing campaigns, sales missions and international media exposure” for the continued rise in tourism figures.
