October 29, 2002: Bombers Hold Awards Ceremony GEORGES POUND BOMBERS IN SEVENTH, WIN 15 - 5 Staff Writer
At the top of the seventh inning, Tuesday night, the Bombers were down three runs and poised to make another come-back run against their arch-rival, the Lucasarts' Boy Georges. After the smoke cleared, the Lucasarts team had put another eight runs on the scoreboard, and went on the take the first contest of the season, fifteen to five. Duncan Sutherland, pitching in his fifty-fifth game in Bomber uniform, had great control during the entire game, and looked to cruise through the final inning. Walking only one batter through seven innings, the top of the George's order banged out 8 back-to-back hits. "It was weird," commented rookie catcher, Katie Lynch. "It was the seventh inning, and their bats just suddenly came alive." Unfortunately, the Bombers didn't have as much luck in their half of the inning. The home team hit for a combined average of .353, continuing their regular season hitting slump from last September, when they hit .310 in a season-ending loss to the Traveling All-Stars, 9 - 7. "We were pressing a little tonight. We wanted to get aggressive and bang on them early. We were impatient at the plate," said CF Grady Cummings in an after game interview at the Flatiron Bar in San Rafael. "Anyway, we shook the cobwebs loose and we'll be hungry for next Monday's versus the Rebel Scum. I hope they don't take it personally." Dave Latour is the early favorite to receive this year's "Sherman Award". Several of his teammates have already cast their votes. All the Bombers rookies played well, especially Latour, Lynch, and 3B Kevin Scott who altogether collected three hits and an RBI. The Bombers game against the Maulers originally scheduled for last Friday was moved to June 25th. The game against the Rebel Scum, scheduled for next Monday, will be held at a special location: Hillside Field at McInnis Park. Same game time: 6:30PM. BOX SCORE -- TUE. MAY 28, 2001 BOMBERS AB

BOMBERS DIVIDE ZEROES, 18 - 10 July 11, 2002 Associated Press
After a slow start, the Bomber bats came alive to conquer the Magic Zeroes, 18-10, last Thursday night. The Bombers were sent reeling in the first inning, giving up 5 runs on well-placed hitting by the Zeros. The Bombers were in a slight defensive disadvantage, playing with only nine players on the field. But they recovered quickly, hold the Zeroes scoreless for the next four innings. This gave the Bomber bats the opportunity to come alive. In the top of the second inning, the charge was led by P Duncan Sutherland, SS Kevin Scott (SS), 2B Jason Patnode, RF Scott Taylor, and C Fisher Key. Sutherland, Scott, Patnode, and Key recorded 3-for-4 batting, with LF Scott Brew contributing also with a 3-5 night. The battery of Sutherland and Key helped keep the Zeroes at bay. Key showed some solid defense when he pulled in a throw from 1B Todd Krish to stop a Zero runner from scoring. Key was able to keep a toe planted on the base, before the runner could cross the finish line. Many Zeroes were upset by the plate umpire's call, causing the ejection of a Magic Zero player. 2B Lori Petrini struggled at first but came alive in the second half of the game, catching a throw from Krish to stop a lead runner, and also digging a ball out of the dirt, flipping the ball to SS Kevin Scott. Petrini was 2 for 4, with 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. Late in the game, LF Marc Diaz hobbled into 3rd base due to a knee injury. Marc would score on an errant throw and give left field over to a solid defender in Brew. Diaz was 2-5, scoring twice. The other outfielding highlight was the showboat CF Grady Cummings. Cummings continued to impress the fans and the Zeroes, with his speed in the outfield and his acrobatic moves in catching fly balls. Cummings proved he could cover ground playing without a rover, and backing up RF Scott Taylor. Scott Brew also showed some speed and versatility in being able to play positions in right and left fields, as well as first base when called upon. SS Kevin Scott climbed out of his slump, hitting 3 for 4 on the night, and continually pushing the Zeroes to chase him around the bases. Scott forced several errant throws to allow runners to score and for Petrini to move safely to 3rd base in the fourth inning. Quote from Kevin Scott, "I was at the cages before the game. I should be higher in the line-up." The next foe the Bombers face will be the winless Trailer Trash. The Trash, composed mostly of English Cricket players, have had a hard time adjusting to American baseball. It should be a field day for the Bombers at McInnis Park on Monday. Overheard from substitute Manager Krish, "The second half of the lineup
proved they can hit tonight. They brought us quickly back into the
game and the early five runs we gave up were never a factor. It quickly
brought us the confidence needed to win the game."

BOMBERS DERAIL EXPRESS, 10 - 3 July 30, 2002
Duncan Sutherland picked up his sixth victory of the season last night, as he scattered five hits over seven innings and beat the Porkchop Express 10 - 3. A solid Bomber infield backed his effort, as 2B David "Tag 'Em" Latour, SS Kevin Scott and team captain, 3B Vince De Quattro turned in some outstanding play, stopping potential rallies in the second, third and fifth innings. "The infield kept the coffin door shut while I added a couple of nails every inning, " beamed game-winner Sutherland (6-2) in the club house after the game. "The big boys got their licks, but I kept them in the yard. My spinner was working tonight and so they hit most of their stuff into the dirt." In fact, the outfield saw little action, with a couple of long flies going to CF Scott Brew and LF Grady Cummings. Starter Marc Diaz, the Bomber's every day left fielder, has been day-to-day since he sprained his knee running the bases against the Magic Zero earlier in the month. "I was able to rest it today, even though I played five innings. I could have taken a nap in right [field] tonight, " Diaz said. The Express has lost eight straight since their opening day victory against the Imperial Sluggers, and though stayed close in the early innings, was out-matched by the fifth, when the Bomber put the game away with a four-run inning. Leading the charge was Cummings (2-for-3, 1 RBI), who hit a solo in-the-park home-run to the left field wall. Two excellent throws from the left fielder and shortstop nearly nipped Cummings at the plate. De Quattro and Krish both had perfect games, going 3-for-3 with a combined three runs scored and two runs driven in. De Quattro might have scored another run for the Bombers, but was thrown out at the plate in the first inning, trying to score from first base on Krish's RBI single. Scott and C Fisher Key were also red-hot at the plate, contributing 2-for-3 performances to the Bombers' 16 hit evening. Krish reached a career milestone last night, as his additional three hits put him at the career century mark. Krish joins De Quattro, Diaz and retired SS Eric Schroeder as the only Bombers to reach the Century Club during their careers in the black and gray. Since 1998, Krish has appeared in 67 regular and post-season games, scoring 89 runs on 100 hits, including 27 extra-base hits and four home runs, and posting a solid .518 batting average. He needs just three more runs batted in to reach his 100th career RBI. "Krish is a rock. I mean, the Freight is a giant out there. Without him, we wouldn't be the Bombers. We'd be a smaller, gentler team," grinned De Quattro, after his sixth Zima at Marin Brewery. The Bombers were playing the game for retired Hall-of-Famer, Eric Schroeder, who left the team after his ILM commercial position was "Rennaissanced" late last month. "We retrieved the game ball and had everyone sign it. Eric meant a lot to this team over the past five seasons, and we wanted to show him how much he is missed," said long-time Bomber, Marc Diaz. Schroeder put up Herculean numbers during his career with the Bombers, scoring 90 runs on 104 hits, including 31 doubles, six triples and 16 home runs, most of them fence-clearing blasts that earned him a lasting place in Bomber lore. His 110 RBIs career mark is still a standing Bomber record. In 165 at-bats, he stranded a career low 13 runners on base. His .630 career average is second only to that of another first ballot Bomber Hall-of-Famer, Jesse Russell (.687). The Bomber face the Swinging All-Stars (5-2) next Tuesday, 6:15PM, at the Ranch. The Bombers are looking to avenge two close contest losses to the All-Stars last season and run their winning streak to four games. BOX SCORE -- TUES. JULY 30, 2002 BOMBERS AB

In the bottom of the fifth inning last night, OF Marc Diaz drove an opposite field blast to the wall, cashing in three runs, including the game winner, to beat the Swinging All-stars 16 - 15. When asked about his mysterious inability to hang onto the ball, Cummings laughed. "Hey, that's what's great about this game. You get the win and the rest is ancient history." Diaz's blast couldn't have come at more opportune moment. With two down, 3B Vince De Quattro had just homered to deep right, picking up Cummings (2-for-3, 2 runs scored, 1RBI) from third base and bringing the Bombers within two runs of tying the game. 1B Todd Krish and P Duncan Sutherland delivered key singles and set the stage for Diaz. Down 1-and-2 in the count, Diaz powered a line drive to the corner in deep right and never looked back. "Yeah, it was a great moment," explained Diaz. "They bring in Jerry (Simonsen) to try to shut us down after a solid outing by Rob (deHaan). His pitches were just a little flat. I grooved it, man." Diaz apparently is over his mild knee sprain of several weeks ago. He circled the bases in little over five seconds. "Unbelievable, I think he was running on all fours as he crossed second base. He was a blur of limbs," re-counted Krish. The slugfest between the two 6 and 2 teams produced a combined thirty-one runs and thirty-six hits. The first eight Bomber batsmen picked up fifteen runs on fourteen hits. With the victory, the Bombers moved into sole possession of fourth seed for Tournament pairings, hoping to advance into a tie for second with a victory against the 2 and 8 Sluggers next week. Sutherland joined the venerable "Century Club", garnering his 99th and 100th career hits, while scoring two and driving in a run. C Fisher Key and 2B David Latour continued their hot offense in the bottom of the order, picking up a collective 4-for-5, scoring two and driving in two. SS Kevin Scott improved his batting average to .533 and scoring twice while driving in three. 1B Lori Petrini (.474) led the Bomber women with a 1-for-2 performance, scoring once and driving in a run. The come-from-behind-win was the fifth in Bomber history. Here is a brief re-cap of those most memorable games, grouped by scale of come-back: 7 runs July 2, 2001 -- BOMBERS 11, Darth Sox 10. FIVE RUN 4TH INNING STOPS SLUGGERS August 13, 2002
Staff Writer In the last half of the fourth inning, Tuesday night, the Bombers (7-2) and this year's LFL expansion team, the Imperial Sluggers (2-8), found themselves knotted at five runs apiece. Bomber Captain, Vince De Quattro, disappointed with a lack-luster offense, called a between-innings sideline meeting. The Bombers are in the middle of a home stretch race with three teams, the Pants (9-0), Darth Sox (8-2), and the SLOBS (8-2), and can't afford to stumble with two tough games left to play. "I told them, 'Guys, hey, fire of the tiger.' I've only used that inspirational twice before, once when I was ten years old and once during a wisdom tooth extraction," De Quattro said, during a post-game interview at Marin Brew. "We think he meant 'fire up' or 'Eye of the Tiger'," (referring to a line from the late 70's Hollywood classic film, "Rocky"), "we're not really sure. Cap was in his zone last night." Whether you can attribute it to a captain's inspiration or divine intervention, the Bomber offense went on to score eight unanswered runs, while the defense shut the Slugs down during the two final innings. Highlights include OF Neha Wickramasekaran gloving a can of corn in the third, 1B Todd Krish, SS Kevin Scott and De Quattro snagging hot liners to prevent rallies, and a solid performance from LF Grady Cummings. C Katie Lynch (1-2, .333 AVG) picked up a crucial RBI in the bottom of the fourth, ripping her third single of the year into left field. After the game she said, "I live for the black corner (referring to the way De Quattro annotates a single in the team score book). I've got plenty of power and I'm trying to be more patient up there." Key singles from Lynch, 2B David Latour, C Fisher Key and Wickramasekaran kept rallies alive and supported the eight-run late-inning tallies. P Duncan Sutherland (8-2, 8.38 TRA) pitched another gem, walking one and striking out one over six innings. Sutherland joined De Quattro and Cummings in a multi-hit performance, banged out two solid hits, scoring two and driving in one. Krish (1-3, 2 runs, .517 AVG) picked up his 100th RBI, putting him in the Century Club in two categories (103 hits), and in the event that he scores seven more runs this season, will soon be the only Bomber that will have 100+ runs, hits and RBIs during his Bomber career. "I've got three words that hold the key to this year's LFL Tournament Championship: 'defense', 'defense', and 'defense.' Last week, we allowed the Swinging All-Stars to stay in the game by committing a franchise high ten errors. Yesterday we looked good, real good," said catcher Ann Dial McMillan. McMillan made an outstanding play last week to erase a Swinger base runner attempting to score in the top of the fourth inning. Some work with Bomber hitting coach, Todd Krish, before last night's game, improved her contact. "We're trying to connect Ann with her power," said Krish. "Stop calling me 'Ann'," replied McMillan. The Bombers try to knock off the undefeated Pants next Monday at the Ranch. The Pants are the surprise favorite for top-seeding at this year's LFL Tournament. "A game at a time, man," added RF Frank Becerra. "The Bombers are on it." BOX SCORE -- TUES. AUGUST 13, 2002 BOMBERS AB

PANTS REMAIN UNBEATEN, DROP BOMBERS 16 - 12 August 19, 2002
With just one game left before the LFL Tournament, the Bombers matched up against the unbeaten Pants, Monday night, and fell 16 - 12. The Bombers (8-3) are looking to gain a top-seeding going into the Championships, but must do so with a win next week against the second-place Darth Sox (9-2). The Pants pitching combination of Jeff Benedict and Mike Van Eps cooled the Bomber offense, limiting them to ten hits. A single lapse in defense cost the Bombers 10 runs in the bottom of the third inning, when the Pants took the lead and never looked back. 1B Todd Krish hit his second fence-clearing blast of the season in the

BOMBERS FINISH SEASON WITH VICTORY OVER SOX, 8 - 3 August 26, 2002
Staff Writer - Vince DeQuattro 3B Grady Cummings hit a rocket over the left field wall in the first inning last week, igniting the Bomber attack against the second place Darth Sox, and putting himself squarely in the running for the 2002 E. Schroeder Bomber Award, joining perennial deep ball hitters, Todd Krish and Vince De Quattro. P Duncan Sutherland, on his way to his second MVP season, pitched another gem when the Bombers needed it most, limiting the Sox (9-2) to a single extra base hit and no earned runs in seven innings. "We match up well against them, and over the years, we've had our share of luck when we play them," Sutherland said, referring to the string of five straight victories agaist the Sox in the past three years, including a second-round playoff victory in 2000. For the Bombers, it meant going into the Tournament coming off a big win. "Impetus is everything. We needed to prove to ourselves that we can win the big game, especially after the laugher against the Pants," De Quattro said, making a reference to the 16 - 12 loss against the LFL Division Champion (12-0) two weeks ago. Defense played a big role in last week's victory and defense will figure in the final outcome this weekend. "It's a bigger field [at Mc Innis] than we're used to at the Ranch," said 1B Krish. "Our first game is against the 0-12 Trailer Trash. We 'll need that game to tune up a bit. It's been nearly two weeks since we've seen any action at all. And I haven't played any softball, either." RF Fisher Key, the surprise acquisition from Plano, Texas, ripped a triple in the second inning, cementing his claim on Bomber Rookie of the Year. Key also made an outstanding running catch in the bottom of the fifth to hold off a Sox rally. "Fisher is a stud," said veteran OF, Marc Diaz. "He's our secret weapon." RF Andy Wong collected two hits, adding to his hitting streak, going 4-for-6 in the past two games, including two doubles. 2Bs Jason Patnode, David Latour and Neil Lim Sang continue to hit the ball well, contributing much-needed power to the lower half of the lineup. RF Scott Taylor, in his fourth season in the black and grey, continues to bang out hits, producing runs. "Scott is a veteran. He gets up there and just swings the wood," said Krish. "He's our not-so-secret weapon." The Bombers take on (out) the Trash in the first round of the LFL Tournament, this Saturday, September 7th, at 9:30AM (game time in 10AM), Mc Innis Park, Hillside Field. Hillside field is the field complex nearer the batting cages at Mc Innis County Park. From the 101 Freeway, (northbound or southbound), take the Smith Ranch Road exit east, toward the golf course. Remember, no alcohol is allowed in the park. Sadly, long-time Bomber, Neha Wickramasekaran, will not be on the tournament roster this Saturday. Wickramasekaran joined Escape (Matrix I / II) last week after four years with ILM. "We're playing this one for Neha, " said a subdued Petrini from the locker room, after last Monday's game. "She's been one of the core Bomber women for four years, and we're going to bring her the LFL Championship Game Ball Saturday night." BOX SCORE -- MON. AUGUST 26TH, 2002 BOMBERS

BOMBERS PULVERIZE TRASH, SET NEW LFL SCORING MARK, 39 - 0 Times Staff Writer
A few days after losing a coin toss that sent them to a fourth seeding in the LFL Tournament, the Bombers unleashed a red-hot offense against the thirteenth-seed, Trailer Trash, and ran away 39 - 0 in five innings. Their thirty-nine runs scored is a new LFL Tournament record, and had the run cap rules not been in place, the margin of victory might have been greater. "This game was all about getting on a roll for the rest of Tournament Day," said Bomber Captain, Vince De Quattro, during a brief rest between the morning and afternoon brackets last Saturday. "We knew that the upside to a fourth seeding was getting the last seed match-up in the first game. We really didn't want to show them up (the Trash) by scoring so often, but we felt we needed to get into our groove early." The 2002 Most Improved Player, 2B David Latour, led all batsmen with six RBIs, as he shared his stellar multi-hit performance (3-for-4, three runs scored) with ten of his Bomber teammates. 2002 Season MVP P Duncan Sutherland and RF Frank Becerra contributed perfect 4-for-4 and 3-for-3 outings respectively. OF Lori Petrini and C Ann Dial Mc Millan combined for an impressive offense performance of two hits, three runs scored and four runs batted in, as well as a solid defensive performance that helped limit the Trash to a handful of baserunners, only one of which reached third. The complete game shutout, recorded by Sutherland in his 71st game as a Bomber, was the first in Bomber history. "Duncan was perfect this morning. If he continues to pitch this
way, we might just find ourselves in the Tournament Championship Game at
five o'clock," said Becerra, winking boyishly.

BOMBERS AVENGE 2001 TOURNAMENT LOSS, EDGE
GEORGES, 10 - 9
September 7th, 2002
Times Staff Writer The Bombers scored early and then held on to knock the Gorgeous Georges out of the second round of the LFL Tournament Saturday, 10 - 9. Offensive standout performances by RF Frank Becerra and LF Vince De Quattro contributed three RBIs apiece while Duncan Sutherland pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning to preserve the victory. "We were thinking about getting even with these guys all during the off-season. Then they buried us 15 - 5 in the first game of the regular season. We never let that get to us. We came off a big victory this morning and kept rolling," said winning pitcher, Duncan Sutherland (10-3). The Gorgeous Georges, (and previous incarnations of the successful LucasArts team -- the Fighting Coelacanths and Born to Waggle), have proven to be worthy opponents over the past five years, taking five of the nine games played between the two teams. This year's match-up was the second time the two teams have squared off in the LFL Tournament with identical seedings. Last year, in the second round, the then fifth-seeded Fighting Fish overcame a 14 - 4 deficit with a nine-run sixth inning, and eventually went on upset the fourth-seeded Bombers to later appear in the Championship Game against the Allstars. Saturday would prove no exception, as the Georges fought back in the fifth inning with seven runs and came within a single run of tying the contest. The Bomber's fourth inning rally would prove important. Started by 2B David Latour reaching base on the shortstop's costly error, back-to-back hits by RF Scott Taylor, RF Fisher Key and C Lori Petrini set the table for Becerra. Becerra's deep fly ball to center, mis-handled by the center fielder for a charged error, drove in two runs, including the game winner. "I got a good pitch. I knew that we needed the insurance runs. I mean, we were up 8 - 2 at the time, but look what eventually happened. The ceiling in center is really bright around noontime -- I got a little lucky. I'll take it," said Becerra. Becerra hit a mediocre .235 (4-for-17) with 6 RBIs during the regular season. Through his first two games Saturday, he was hitting .667 (4-for-6) with five runs batted in. Catcher Ann Dial Mc Millan made a rally-preventing catch on a foul pop
in the seventh, and the rest of the Bomber defense was outstanding, allowing
runs in only two of the seven innings.

BOMBERS PULL OFF UPSET, BEAT TOP-SEEDED PANTS, 7 - 6 September 7, 2002 Lucas Valley, CA
BOMBERS ADVANCE TO TROPHY ROUND Only one team has strung together 13 straight wins in a single LFL season in the past 10 years: the 2002 Pants. Undefeated (13-0) going into the third round of the Tournament Saturday, the top-seeded Pants were upended by the Bombers (11-3 ) in seven innings, 7 - 6. Led by hot-hitting CF Marc Diaz and 3B Grady Cummings, the Bombers put together a two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning in a tied ball game. Diaz tripled to the right field corner and Cummings singled him home with the game-winning hit. Duncan Sutherland, pitching the third leg of what was proving to be a marathon event, turned in another gem, limiting the previously undefeated league champions to six runs in the first three innings, and then shut them down for the rest of the game. When Pants third-baseman, Colie Wirtz, lined a shot to Sutherland with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Sutherland calmly tossed the ball to 1B Todd Krish, doubling David Meny off first base, and secured the win. "We went crazy. We just played two incredible games and we were suddenly in the Championship. It was amazing," said Sutherland who had just pitched the game of a lifetime. Several times, Pants batters got ahead in the count, 3 - 0, and Sutherland was able to battle back and either strike them out, or get them to put the ball into play. Earlier that inning, C Ann Dial Mc Millan made her second spectacular catch of the day, a low foul pop to record the first out. "Ann Dial's catch set the tone for the last inning. But it was like that all game. Everytime they'd threaten, we'd respond. Same thing in the game against the Georges. We allowed them one big inning, and then shut them down the rest of the way," said CF Diaz (3-for-3, two triples, three runs scored, 1 RBI). The Bomber defense, steadily improving in the final weeks of the season, was perfect in this game. Setting the tone early, De Quattro fielded a Jeff Benedict single in shallow left and made a throw to Cummings at third base to erase Mike Van Eps and end a potential one-out, runners at first and third scoring threat. "That put out shut them down. They were forced to respect our outfield after that. They stopped challenging us on the bases, " said Cummings (2-for-3, 2 RBIs). RF Frank Becerra (1-for-1, 1 RBI) had another clutch hit in the top of the second to score RF Fisher Key, who, a few batters earlier, had made a mad dash around the bases to get into scoring position. "If Fisher doesn't execute heads up baserunning after the right fielder bobbles the catch, we don't score there and we're still tied going into the seventh. Fisher had a big day, as big as anyone," said team captain, Vince De Quattro. During the last four seasons, the Bombers have won seven of eight contests with the Pants, including two pre-season match-ups. Long considered a push-over, the Pants added several key players, including pitcher Mike Van Eps, infielders Colie Wirtz and Scott Bonnenfant, which ultimately helped the Pants attain their impressive season this year. The win puts the Bombers in the Championship game for the third time in five years. In 1998, the inaugural year for the Bombers, they defeated the Magic Zero, Waggle and the Raiders to win the LFL Tournament. In 2000, victories against the Swingers and Darth Sox got them into the Championship vs. the Maulers, which the Ranch team ultimately won, 9 - 3. In 2002, history repeats itself, as the Bombers will take on the Ranch SLOBS (Maulers) for the LFL title. BOX SCORE -- SAT. SEPT 7TH, 2002

RANCH SLOBS STOP BOMBERS IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, 13 - 3 AP Wire Services
The Bomber's tournament softball marathon ended Saturday, as the fourth-seeded Bombers were lapped by the second-seeded SLOBS, 13 - 3 in seven innings on a hot, windy, afternoon at McInnis Park. After playing eighteen innings, scoring fifty-six runs, limiting their opponents to just fifteen runs scored, and gaining their third championship-round berth in five years, the Bombers ran out of gas. In a brief ceremony after the game, team captain LF Vince De Quattro presented the runner-up trophies to each of his teammates. "Hey, look at this team, right now. Can you tell that they came in second place? You can't. We're thrilled that we've played as well as we did today and we're proud to have competed for the LFL crown," said De Quattro, in a post-game press conference. SLOB pitcher Jaime Jaramillo pitched a gem, baffling the Bomber hitters for seven innings, getting most of his outs with a high-arcing pitch coming in from out of the late afternoon sun. After giving up three runs in the first two innings, he settled down and blanked the Bombers the rest of the way. "He was nearly unhittable today," said 2001 MVP 3B Grady Cummings (0-for-3). "He limited our Murderer's Row (Cummings, De Quattro, 1B Todd Krish, P Duncan Sutherland, and SS Kevin Scott) to a combined 1-for-15. That's scary." Fatigue most likely played a role in the collective slump, as this years thirteen-team tournament bracket meant that seeds 4-13 played a minimum of four games. The Bomber's team batting average in the championship game dropped to a season low .216 from a season average of .471. Despite the power shortage from the top of the lineup, the lower order continued to thrive, with standout performances from Tournament MVP RF Frank Becerra (2-for-2, 2 RBIs), RF Fisher Key (1-for-2, 1 run scored), RF Scott Taylor (1-for-2, 1 run scored) and 2B Neil Lim Sang (1-for-2). Becerra finished the day with an incredible .875 batting average, hitting 7-for-8, scoring three times and driving in eight. CF Marc Diaz was the only Bomber hitter to get more hits Saturday, going 9-for-13 (.692), including a home run, three triples and double, scoring nine times and driving in six. Sutherland (12 - 4) went the distance for the Bombers, but picked up the loss. "Hey, no worries. Today was still a story-book finish to a fantastic season. We fought hard all day -- all season, to get here, and we have everything to be proud of, " Sutherland said in a post-game conference call from his ranch in Novato. The Bomber battery of Sutherland and C Ann Dial Mc Millan put in twenty-five innings, nearly 360 pitches, and allowed only 28 runs over four games. The Bombers announced plans to hold their Annual Awards Ceremony after
the game at Sutherland Ranch in Novato. The team organization will
present the Most Valuable Player Award, the Eric Schroeder Bomber Award,
the Most Improved Player and the Bomber Rookie of the Year Awards.

BOMBERS HONORED AT AWARDS PRESENTATION AP Wire Service
October 29, 2002 Staff Writer The successes of the Bomber 2002 LFL season went beyond everyone's expectations: finishing league play in third place with nine wins and three losses, and posting a second place finish in the Tournament with wins over the Trailer Trash (39-0), Gorgeous Georges (10-9), and the undefeated, League Champion, Pants (7-6). Every year, after the final game of the Bombers' season, the team gathers at one of the player's homes to present the Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player, Rookie of the Year, and The Bomber Award, re-named this year in honor of the retired slugger and first round Hall-of-Famer, The Eric Schroeder Bomber Award. This year, veteran pitcher Duncan Sutherland, and his lovely wife Karen, hosted the event at their spacious home in suburban Marin County. Amid a flurry of press trucks and catering vehicles, a fleet of limousines rolled in, depositing an upbeat Bomber squad, a bit weary after nearly eight hours of company softball. After a brief round of congratulations and cocktails, and the awards ceremony began. Captain Vince De Quattro, took the podium and introduced the winners. "Of course, everyone who contributed to this incredible season is a
winner. Softball is a team sport. It requires a twenty
person roster that performs on behalf of the team," De Quattro said.
"Tonight, I am delighted to present awards to several special individuals
that helped us compete on a higher level this season."
SUTHERLAND CLAIMS MVP Speculation during the final week of the season had P Duncan Sutherland and LF Grady Cummings in a virtual deadlock for league MVP. Sutherland earned the regular season batting championship with a .647 average (22-for-34) and a .612 on-base percentage, tops on the team. Cummings, the 2001 MVP, had another remarkable season, hitting .583 (21-for-36), lead the team with 22 runs batted in, and hit three home runs (one fence-clearing). But his role as the Bomber's workhorse hurler (12-4) ultimately earned Sutherland his second MVP award in five seasons (1998). As the Bomber starter, Sutherland didn't miss a game, nor did he miss a single inning, pitching in all 94 frames this season, including 25 innings during the marathon tournament day. "At the end of any other season, the MVP goes to Grady. His 24 runs, 27 hits and 28 runs batted in seem to back that up. But here Duncan puts up offensive stats identical to Grady's and pitched his ass off as well," said De Quattro. Other twenty-plus hitters missed the cut, as well. LF Marc Diaz put on an amazing show in the 2002 Tournament, collecting nine runs, nine hits and six runs batted in, boosting his season totals to 30 runs (tying a season record), 29 hits and 19 runs batted in and earning the batting crown with a .592 average. 1B Todd Krish had another great year, collecting 23 runs and 24 hits while driving in 27 runs, including two fence-clearing home runs. De Quattro joined the Century Club during the Trailer Trash massacre, quietly collecting 21 runs, 24 hits and 26 runs batted in over the duration of the season. Kevin Scott, the highly-recruited 2001 Replacements shortstop, lent his power to the Bomber "murderers row", slugging 19 hits, driving in 13 and scoring 22 times himself. In all the "row" accounted for 142 of the team's 231 runs scored during the season. KEY AWARDED ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Fisher Key, a relative novice at the start of the season, became a force to be reckoned with, as the opposition discovered during the season and especially during the Tournament. Key arrived with Bomber C Ann Dial Mc Millan. "We recruited the 5'10" Mc Millan to bolster our women's ranks, and got this guy in the deal, " said Todd Krish, in charge of pre-season recruiting and player management. "Turns out it was the best deal we've ever made." Key was outstanding at the plate, with his controversial hand grip and swing position, blasted a torrid .486 (18-for-37), scored 13 runs and cashed in 11, mostly while pulling yeoman's duty at the end of the lineup during the first half of the season. Manager De Quattro noticed his prowess with the bat early on, and Key was moved up from batting last on June 3rd, to the seventh position by mid-August. Key gave the Bombers the edge in the post-season too, going 5-for-10 and scoring seven runs, many on daring runs between the bases. "He's the hottest-hitting Bomber rookie ever. We're taking Polaroids of his grip and distributing them to the rest of the team before next season, " said De Quattro. LATOUR NAMED MOST IMPROVED Due to an abundance of veteran position players around the Bomber infield, new players often find themselves parked at second base for the duration of the season. This year, returning player 2B David Latour distinguished himself with solid defensive play during the stretch run. He improved his offense as well, going from a respectable .375 average (3-for-8, 5 RBI) in 1999 to an impressive .414 average in 2002 (12-for-29, 15 RBI). "Dave keeps the chatter going when he's not out there in the field. It's like having an 11th and 12th man on defense, " said past 2000 MIP, Neil Lim Sang. KRISH HONORED AS BOMBER OF THE YEAR Though the competition was fierce, Todd "Freight Train" Krish edged two-season veteran Grady Cummings and five-season veteran Vince De Quattro in the Bomber Award balloting. With perennial winner Eric Schroeder sidelined due to company layoffs, the way was cleared for the crowning of a new Bomber. Schroeder's prowess with the long ball motivated the re-naming of the annual award. "Eric is still the definitive Bomber. Now he's got a trophy with his name on it. We can only hope to do his legacy justice," said an emotional Krish during his acceptance speech. Though De Quattro hit seven home runs during the season, Krish and Cummings were the only Bombers to clear the fences, Krish doing so twice and Cummings once. Both had an identical number of extra base hits, with Cummings edging Krish by three percentage point in slugging average. Cummings also held the edge in runs batted in with 22 versus Krish's 20. In the end, it was Krish's longevity with the team that earned him the award. "Todd and Grady could have shared the Bomber Award this year. No doubt these two will be in competition for years to come. The election committee felt that Krish earned the award this year, especially after a resurgence in his game after sustaining his knee injury," said De Quattro. BECERRA NAMED TOURNAMENT MVP From out of right field, literally, Frank Becerra was selected the Bomber Tournament MVP after posting heroic numbers during the final LFL round. A sleeper during the season, Becerra's .235 average seemed surprisingly modest in comparison to his 2001 performance (.441, 15-for-34). Whatever he ate the Friday night before the Tournament proved to be a hitting potion, as he banged out seven hits in eight at bats, while driving in eight runners, second only to clean-up hitter De Quattro's RBI total (9) on Saturday. "I was happy that I was able to get things going for Tournament Day. I guess a picked a good time to break out of my slump," said an elated Becerra, holding his trophy before a bank of photographers. BOMBERS 2003 The Bombers will take the next several months off, contemplating their
productive season. A dominant force in the LFL, they will attempt
to improve their roster with some aggressive off-season recruiting.
Several sources close to the team have indicated interest in such LFL standouts
as ex-Sox center fielder, R.J. Williams, and Swinging-Allstar pitcher
Rob de Haan, as well as the possible return of (2000-2001) Bomber
Barry Safley. Combined with the addition of recruits new to
the LFL, 2003 should prove to be another incredible year for the gray and
black.
