| Topography Gently sloping eastward from the escarpment, McCreary is primarily a level plain. Its drainage, mainly through the Turtle River Basin is to the north and into Lake Dauphin. Soils Two broad belts of soils can be found. A north/south belt of soils to the west of McCreary is principally in class 1,2 or 3 and in the east the soils are 3, 4 or 5. Soils in class 1,2 and 3 have no, or moderate limitations for crops. Soils in class 4 or 5 have severe, to very severe limitations and are principally used for forage and livestock. In addition, some soils in the area are stony and lack drainage. Overall, the soils are good and offer a wide range of options for agriculture production. Agriculture Agriculture is the main activity in rural McCreary. Wheat, oats, barley, canola, flax, and forage are the chief crops. 43% of McCreary's area is good agricultural land ranging from classes 1-3. They lie primarily in the western portion of the municipality parallel to the Riding Mountain National Park. In addition to several specialized livestock breeders, beef cattle, hogs and horses are the main types of livestock. 50% of the Municipality is improved land and pasture where beef is the major production. Most farms involve mixed agriculture. Woodlands and waterfowl habitat occupies the remainder of the acreage. This results in diversity and stability in the immediate economy. Farm Sizes Of the areas 160 farms, over 30% of farm sizes are larger than one section. This trend continues as farm sizes enlarge annually. |
