The next morning:

[Riou's bedroom--Eilie is still there. Did she spend the whole night sitting at the table there? Nanami is waking Riou up.]

Nanami:
"Good morning, Riou. There's another meeting today, Lords Viktor and Shu are already waiting."

Upon entering the Great Hall:

[Shu, Apple, Viktor, Fitcher, and Teresa are present. Shu looks around.]

Shu:
"Good day, Lord Riou. It seems everyone's here."

Viktor:
"Flik's not here yet."

[Flik hurries in.]

Flik:
"Sorry. I got held up."

Viktor:
"Where were you? Busy pursuing that little brat Nina?"

[Flik steams.]

Flik:
"Don't make me sick! It's she who's pursuing me! She stole my bandanna and washed it! It took me all morning to find it!!!"

Viktor:
"Ha ha ha ha ha! It's like you have a wife already!"

Flik:
"You'll pay for that, Viktor. But more importantly, Shu, what's this meeting about?"

Shu:
"Are you ready, Lord Riou? Well then, I'll begin. Of the 5 Cities and 1 Knightdom in the State, South Window has been destroyed, and Muse and Greenhill are under enemy control. Somehow we've managed to protect Two River, but Tinto is still closed to us. I think we should forge a bond with the only alliance member left, the Knightdom of Matilda. Their army is as strong as Muse's, and if we ally with them, we'll be able to attack the enemy from two fronts. Do you agree, Lord Riou?"

Riou:
[x] "Yeah..."
[ } ". . . . . . . . . . ."

Shu:
"Greenhill is still occupied by Highland, so we'll have to travel to Matilda in small groups, so as not to be detected. Lord Riou, please decide who you wish to accompany you."

[This time, I chose Flik, Viktor, Clive, Shiro, and Nanami--mainly because I knew I was going to be stuck with Nanami one way or another, so I might as well just put her in my party now.]

Fitcher:
"The knights of Matilda have been notified of our plans. Please head north of Greenhill and use the hidden path through the woods. When you arrive in Matilda, they should send a party to meet you."

Shu:
"Be very careful, Lord Riou. You belong to all of us now."

[Riou is free to leave.]

At the beginning of the forest path:

Nanami:
"Hey, do you think the Knights are those cool guys we met in Muse?"

Riou:
[ ] "Probably."
[x] "'Cool?'..."

Nanami:
"What? What? WHAT? Are you JEALOUS? Don't worry, Riou! Maybe one day you'll be cool too!"

[They approach the two White Knights guarding the entrance to the path.]

Knight:
"Yes, I understand. You may pass."

[They pass by Badeaux standing under his tree. He can be ignored at this point, he has nothing to say yet. At a certain point on the path, Viki suddenly appears. She's sweattling and holding her hands up like she'd just been ready to bite into the middle of a three-feet-long ear of corn or something.]

Viki:
"Huh? Wha? Wha? Wha? Where am I? Where'd my meal go???"

[Viki notices Riou.]

Viki:
"Hey, where am I? WHAT?! The City-State of Jowston???? How strange... Hmm, can I even go back...? Um, um, I'm a little lost... Hey, do you think I could stay at your house for a little while?"

Riou:
[x] "Uh... sure, okay."
[ ] "A cute girl like you? Of course."
[ ] "Absolutely not!!"

Viki:
"Really?? Wow, thanks. Thank you. So, so, where's your house??"
"Okay, it's pretty close. We should be all right. Reeeadddyyy... YAH!!"

[She teleports out, then back.]

Viki:
"Oh yeah, I forgot. Um, what's your name? Riou. Okay. My name is Viki. I specialize in 'Blinking Magic.' Basically, I teleport things. Nice to meet you!"
"Then, I'll go on ahead to your house. Or should I come with you?"

Riou:
[ ] "Okay, come with us..."
[x] "Go on ahead."

Viki:
"Okay!! Then, I'll go on ahead!! I'll see you when you get back!!"

She uses a lot of exclamation marks, doesn't she?

[On the next screen, there are two more White Knights.]

Knight 1:
"You may pass."

Knight 2:
"Welcome to the domain of the Knights of Matilda."

[Once Riou passes them, Miklotov and a large company of Blue Knights approach the group.]

Miklotov:
"Lord Riou of the Orange Army. I am Miklotov, Captain of the Blue Knights. I am here to greet you."

Nanami:
"Oh! I was right! It's the guy we met in Muse!"

Miklotov:
"Met in Muse... Ah, at Jowston Hill... I apologize for that, but at that time I had no idea of the man Lord Riou would become. Please allow me to escort you to our castle."

[Scene fades.]

Entering Rockaxe Town:

Miklotov:
"This is our base, Rockaxe Castle. Lord Gorudo is waiting inside. Please enter."

[Fade to Miklotov leading the group up the stairs to the castle.]

Miklotov:
"Lord Gorudo is waiting in the reception area. Please proceed straight ahead."

[If you stop to talk to the maid before entering the castle:]

Maid:
"The Knights here are usually gentlemen, but a little bit too naive. But Lord Camus is different..."

[They enter the "reception area." It looks more like Gorudo's throne room. Camus is standing next to Gorudo's throne.]

Gorudo:
"You're Riou? Hmph... You're just a little boy! The rumors that your army managed to best Highland must be gross exaggerations at best."

Riou:
[x] "What!?"
[ ] ". . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."

Nanami:
"Shh, Riou!"

Gorudo:
"The Muse Army were such pathetic cowards. We sent troops to save them, but Muse fell before they even arrived!"

Riou:
[ ] "How dare you!"
[x] ". . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."

Gorudo:
"I say that because, like Muse, you're a leader of a tiny army futilely battling Highland. You'll probably meet the same fate. Probably. Camus, see Lord Riou and his party to a guest room. Let them rest a while, then escort them to the border. Our business is done."

Camus:
"Yes sir. Lord Riou... This way."

Yes, Matilda, where Knight Captains act as bellhops.

[Fade to outside of Riou's room.]

Camus:
"Lord Riou, this will be your room. Please excuse me."

[Camus begins to walk away, then turns back.]

Camus:
"Lord Riou, try not to let that upset you... Well, if you'll excuse me..."

[Camus leaves.]

Nanami:
"What next? Should we try to talk to him again tomorrow? Anyway, we should try to get some sleep. I'm tired."

[Fade to inside the room. Nanami and Riou are standing next to a large bed.]

Nanami:
"Should we go to sleep now? The beds seem quite comfortable."

Riou:
[x] "Let's get some sleep."
[ ] "Let's look around a bit more."

There's really nothing to do but sleep.

Nanami:
"Good idea. Ahhh... My legs are sore."

[Fade to the same room later in the night. Riou has to share a bed with his sister, poor kid. Nanami is snoring.]

Leknaat (off-screen):
"Riou... Wake up... Riou..."

[Riou wakes up, looks around, and gets out of bed. Leknaat appears behind him.]

Leknaat:
"Riou... You've become so strong... But the threat of battle is still nipping at our heels... Much blood and many tears have been shed... But you can't turn your back on the fight. You mustn't avert your eyes. In you... In you rests the hopes and dreams of so many. You can't throw that away. The Rune on your right hand will guide you to the final battle... And the results of that... Will create our future... Our destiny... Riou."

[Leknaat disappears. Fade to morning.]

Nanami:
"Good morning, Riou! Hmm? What's wrong?"

[Riou leaves the room and goes upstairs. In front of the reception room, Miklotov passes them in a hurry.]

Miklotov:
"Sorry, but we're in a rush."

[Miklotov enters the reception room.]

Nanami:
"What the hell's going on? Shall we go see?"

[They enter. Miklotov is facing Gorudo. Camus is standing beside Gorudo's throne.]

Gorudo:
"What's with all the commotion!?"

Miklotov:
"The Highland Army has appeared at the Matilda-Muse border."

Camus:
"So they've finally come to give us a chance to prove our valor?"

Gorudo:
"What the hell...? Do they intend to invade us? I can't imagine they'd attack now."

Miklotov:
"No, it seems the Highland Army is pursuing refugees from Muse. The refugees must be trying to flee to Matilda... Lord Gorudo, we must mobilize to save the refugees immediately!"

Gorudo:
"Hmmmmm... I see. Prepare to mobilize."

Miklotov:
"Yes SIR!"

[Miklotov leaves.]

Gorudo:
"Well well... What on Earth..."

Camus:
"Lord Riou, did you hear that? We're mobilizing now, what do you intend to do?"

Riou:
[x] "I'll go too."
[ ] "Hold on a minute!"
[ ] "I'll be watching."

Camus:
"Then let's get going."

Battle map screen:

[Riou's unit and five units of knights are on the Matilda side of the border. Three units of refugees are still a good long way from the border.]

Camus:
"That looks like it..."

Gorudo:
". . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."

Refugees:
"We're almost to the Matilda border... Keep going!!!"

The next speech is attributed to the Refugees, but it doesn't make much sense. I suspect it might actually be generic Matilda knights speaking.

Refugees:
"We should be able to save them."

[Luca appears with six units of his soldiers. Jowy, Culgan, Seed, Kiba, and Klaus are all there.]

Luca Blight:
"Ha! They're sitting ducks now! Don't let a single one slip away! Kill the ones that resist and send the rest back to Muse in chains!"

Again, the next speech is a little confusing.

Refugees:
"But they've come so far..."

Perhaps they mean "But we've come so far"? Or perhaps the speaker attribution is a mistake.

Refugees:
"H... Help us! They'll kill us if we go back!!!"

[And the Highland Army proceeds with the slaughter. The knights and Riou are too far away to be of any help.]

Miklotov:
"Lord Gorudo! We have to save them!"

Gorudo:
"We will do no such thing. Hold your position, Miklotov."

Miklotov:
"What are you saying!? They're being slaughtered in front of us! It would sully our reputation as knights if we just sit idly by!"

Gorudo:
"It's happening outside of our territory. We have no right to intervene. It's more important that we bolster our defenses. Let no one past the border, refugee or otherwise."

Miklotov:
"You're ordering us to watch them die!?! I can't... I won't..."

Gorudo:
"Are you saying you intend to disobey an order? Have you no devotion to your lord, Miklotov?"

Camus:
"Miklotov..."

Miklotov:
"Damn. . . . . . . . . . . . ."

[And more slaughter.]

Again, I think the next speech is not attributed properly.

Refugees:
"No... It's too late... They'll all be killed.

Refugees:
"Please stop..."

Luca Blight:
"It seems they've lost the will to resist. Round up the pigs!"

[The Highland Army and the remaining refugees disappear.]

Gorudo:
"Let us pull back, Camus, Miklotov."

Miklotov:
"Damn. . . . . . . . . . . . . ."

Camus:
"Miklotov..."

Back in Gorudo's reception room:

Gorudo:
"Ultimately, Highland did not invade. It seems even the great Luka Blight has not the courage to face the Knights of Matilda.

Unfortunately for Gorudo, Luca Blight and Luka Blight are not the same person...

Gorudo:
Stand down now, Miklotov, Camus."

Camus:
"Yes..."

Miklotov:
". . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."

[Miklotov and Camus leave. Then Gorudo leaves. Then Riou and company leave. They find Camus and Miklotov talking outside of the reception room door.]

Camus:
"Calm down, Miklotov. What do you expect to accomplish, going into enemy territory alone?"

Miklotov:
"But...!!! I have to see with my own eyes! I have to see what those Highland bastards are doing in Muse! Don't try to stop me, Camus."

Camus:
"I see. I will not interfere."

[Miklotov leaves. Camus sees Riou standing there.]

Camus:
"This is a troubling situation... Going into Muse alone... Lord Riou, I cannot leave this castle. I must stay behind to respond to Lord Gorudo's capricious commands. You can get to Muse through the border crossing south of here. I beg of you... Please protect Miklotov."

[Camus leaves. Riou and company go out into the town, where they spot Miklotov speaking to two Blue Knights.]

Blue Knight:
"Please wait, Sir Miklotov! It's suicide to go to Muse alone."

Miklotov:
"Don't worry, I'll be careful. I have to see what's going on in Muse. I will return soon!"

Blue Knight:
"B... But..."

Miklotov:
"I'm counting on you."

[Miklotov leaves. Riou and company follow.]

(If you haven't done it yet, this is a good time to make a side trip and do Futch and Humphrey's quest.)

At the Muse-Matilda Border:

[Miklotov is standing looking at the gate. When Riou arrives, Miklotov turns to him.]

Miklotov:
"Lord Riou, are you going to Muse also? I must beg of you... Will you let me accompany you? I must cross the border, but the guards are looking out for me, and I'm too conspicious alone."

Riou:
[ ] "I can't."
[x] "Okay."

Miklotov:
"Thank you. I swear on my honor that I will not forget this."

[Miklotov joins the convoy and follows, quite obviously, behind.]

Guard:
"Are you going to Muse? It's very dangerous with the 'refugee hunt' that's going on now."

Second guard:
"You... You're Sir Miklotov!"

Miklotov:
"Damn..."

Riou:
[x] "Pass by force"
[ ] "Do not resist"

Guard:
"Sir Miklotov, we received a message from Sir Camus. It said we were not to interfere with your secret mission. Please be careful."

[If you talk to the guards again when you're free to leave:]

Guard on the right:
"There's a rumor that people captured by Highland don't return. Please be careful."

Guard on the left:
"There have been a lot of refugees lately, so be careful."

[They pass through. Miklotov stops to look back.]

Miklotov:
"Camus... Let's go, Lord Riou."

Approaching Muse City:

[The world map screen suddenly changes to a scene. The group has reached a grassy area overlooking the city in the distance.]

Miklotov:
"That's Muse in the distance. We must be careful from here on."
"Wha... What...?"

[Scene fades to FMV of Muse in the distance. A strange black cloud forms over the city accompanied by the blue glow of magic. The cloud grows, then morphs into a huge, silver, two-headed wolf. It is the Beast Rune.]

[Scene fades to Jowston Hill. Luca and Jowy are standing there.]

Luca:
"HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!!! Look at how beautiful it is!!! Watching their filthy souls sucked into oblivion!!!!"

Jowy:
". . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."

Luca:
"What's wrong? Don't you think it's beautiful? Weren't you also born without the legitimate blood of your father?"

That's just a weird line. Luca is legitimate, even though Jillia and Jowy are not. But why am I expecting a madman to make sense?

Jowy:
"Why would you ask that...?"

Luca:
"Because you interest me. Your eyes are different from the eyes of those other pigs. Just below the surface, I see the darkness inside you. Surely you must feel it too."

Jowy:
"But I.... I am grateful to my father for taking me in."

[Jowy walks away.]

Luca:
"Pahahahahahahahah!!!!! Sacrifice their souls!!! Free the evil beast!!! Cleanse this foul land!!!"

[Scene fades to Riou and company.]

Miklotov:
"What on earth..."

[Scene fades to world map screen.]

Entering Muse:

Miklotov:
"It has been a while, but... There are no signs of life..."

[Run towards Jowston Hill. A man comes through the arch down from Jowston Hill.]

Man:
"Huh... ha... Ahh... Help me..."

[The man collapses. A Highland Soldier runs up from behind him.]

Highland Soldier:
"Stop! Identify yourselves!!!"

Miklotov:
"We don't have to introduce ourselves to the likes of you!!!"

Highland Soldier:
"Something's funny about them!!! Seize them!!!"

[They fight.]

Highland Soldier:
"Who the hell are these guys?"

[The soldier runs back to the Hill.]

Miklotov:
"Are you okay? What the hell happened?"

Man:
"A m... Monster... A silver monster... Ev... Everyone... Eaten alive... My... My wife... My kids... Father... Mother... Got them... Everyone... Eaten... alive..."

Miklotov:
"Hey, hey! Hold on..."

[The man dies--of an ellipses overdose, probably.]

Miklotov:
"Damn!!! That bastard... Luca Blight!!! How dare he! He'll pay for this!"
"Lord Riou, I'm going back to Rockaxe. I'll send those Highlanders back where they came from!"

Highland Soldier (off-screen):
"There they are!!!"

Miklotov:
"Hurry! We mustn't be captured!!!"

[They run and leave the city.]

Back at the Muse-Matilda border:

Guard:
"Sir Miklotov, I'm glad you were able to make it back safely! After the incident, Lord Gorudo immediately ordered us to close the border, and not let anyone pass. We were really worried."

Miklotov:
"Thank you for your concern."

[If you talk to the guards again when you're free to leave:]

Guard on the right:
"Lord Camus is worried too. Please hurry back to Rockaxe."

Guard on the left:
"Are you well, my lord? The people in the villages around here saw something frightening in Muse, so I was concerned."

Back in Rockaxe Town:

Nanami:
"Somehow we made it back..."

Miklotov:
"But the people of Muse... Lord Riou, I'm sure Lord Gorudo will understand when we inform him... I swear, by my hands, Luca Blight will fall..."

Nanami:
"Hurry, Riou!!! Now the Knightdom of Matilda will surely join you as allies!"

[They go to the castle. Camus greets them.]

Camus:
"So you've returned, Miklotov! I am glad that you are safe."

Miklotov:
"Yes... I met Lord Riou on the way, and we travelled together. But never mind that, where is Lord Gorudo?"

Camus:
"Did something happen? It's not like you to be so imperious."

Miklotov:
"Something happened! I only know fragments of the story, but those Highland dogs are doing something horrible!!!"

Camus:
"Calm yourself. A knight should know how to control his temper."

Miklotov:
"You don't understand! Out of my way, Camus! This emotion can't be controlled!"

[Miklotov brushes past him.]

Camus:
"Hmmph. What got into him?"

[Camus leaves. Riou enters the reception room. Miklotov faces Gorudo. Five Red Knights flank the left side of the room, and five Blue Knights flank the right.]

Gorudo:
"I see you're safe, Miklotov."

Miklotov:
"Lord Gorudo, I have a request. Please let me take the Army, or even just my own Blue Knight Squadron, to invade Muse."

Gorudo:
"Are you mad? Why should we do that? Highland has no intention of fighting us, but you want to start a war with them?"

Miklotov:
"The Highland Army gathered all the people of Muse and the nearby towns, and sacrificed them in some bizarre ritual! It was a massacre! We can't go on pretending not to see what's happening! What of our honor as Knights!?"

Gorudo:
"I don't know what you saw, but we Knights have a responsibility to govern this land. We can't send its people into danger."

Miklotov:
"You can't think Highland will leave us be for long! When the other State cities fall, Luca Blight will come to destroy us!!!"

[Gorudo stands up.]

Gorudo:
"Silence! This 'massacre' you're babbling about, did you actually see it with your own eyes?"

Miklotov:
"No, but, but... We know they captured all the refugees..."

Gorudo:
"Shut up! You speak of 'Knight's Honor?' As a Knight Captain, didn't you pledge to me, by the emblem on your chest, your undying loyalty? Is breaking that pledge part of a 'Knight's Honor'?"

Miklotov:
". . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."
"I did... swear to you by this Emblem... But this is my true 'Knight's Honor'."

Gorudo:
"If that's the way you want it, fine. Now get out of my sight!"

Miklotov:
"Breaking a pledge... Breaking a pledge of loyalty is a Knight's highest disgrace... But..."
"But I am... I am... I am!!! I am a Human first and a Knight second!!! I don't need your title! I resign myself to your disgrace! But I will never forgive you!!! I can never look idly by while lives are being thrown away!!!"

[Miklotov rips his emblem from his chest.]

Gorudo:
"You... You... To break your oath..."

[Camus enters the room.]

Camus:
"Miklotov is just upset... Let him cool off a bit."

Gorudo:
"You came just in time, Camus. Arrest this man! Throw him in prison!"

Camus:
"Arrest Miklotov? I can't do that."

Gorudo:
"What are you saying...?"

[Camus rips his emblem from his chest.]

Camus:
"I guess I'm going to break my oath too. I cannot obey."

Miklotov:
"Camus..."

Camus:
"Lord Riou, please allow Miklotov and I to join the Orange Army. We are no longer Knights, but we still posess our hearts and our skills. Surely they will aid you."

Gorudo:
"You... You traitors! You can't just leave! You, guards, arrest them all!!!"

[No one moves.]

Gorudo:
"Quickly! Hurry up!"

Blue Knight:
". . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."
"Sir Camus, Sir Miklotov, please let me accompany you. I want to fight by your side."

Miklotov:
"You... You..."

[The Knight rips his emblem off.]

Another Blue Knight:
"Sir Miklotov, please take me too."

[More emblem ripping. The room is filled with the clinks of emblems hitting the floor, as all present take after Miklotov and Camus.]

Gorudo:
"You fools!!! So you've turned a handful of Knights against me... What do you think that will accomplish!?"

[Gorudo disappears behind his throne.]

Miklotov:
"...I'm sorry, everyone... Lord Riou, it's not safe to stay in the castle any longer."

[Fade to Miklotov, Camus, and Riou in Rockaxe Town.]

Miklotov:
"Let's escape the castle before Gorudo calls in his army."

Camus:
"Miklotov, you go with Lord Riou. I'll talk with some of the other Knights and catch up. I should be able to convince a few more to join us... Although I hate to council them towards treason."

Miklotov:
"Be careful."

Camus:
"Don't worry, I'll come soon."

[Camus leaves.]

Miklotov:
"We need to hurry. The Muse border is probably still under Gorudo's control, so let's escape through Greenhill."

[Fade to the forest path.]

Miklotov:
"We should be safe now..."

Nanami:
"Haaahhh... I'm so tired of constantly running away..."

[A Blue Knight runs up to them.]

Knight:
"Lord Miklotov, they're coming after us!!!"

Miklotov:
"What! There's too many..."

Nanami:
"Yipes!!! It's okay... We'll triumph somehow. Prepare for battle!"

[Shu approaches them.]

Shu:
"We've come to escort you back, Lord Riou."

Nanami:
"Shu! Thank God! Now we'll stand a fighting chance!!!"

Shu:
"I doubt you'll need us. Take a closer look at your pursuers."

[Camus and a bunch of knights enter the scene.]

Camus:
"Sorry we're late, Miklotov."

Miklotov:
"Camus... You... What's with all these people?"

Camus:
"They share our disgust for Gorudo's methods. About half of both the Red and Blue Knights have decided to join us."

Shu:
"You must be Lord Camus and Lord Miklotov. I am Shu, the Orange Army's strategist."

Miklotov:
"It is a pleasure to meet you. I am the former Blue Knight Captain of Matilda, Miklotov."

Camus:
"And I'm Camus, former Red Knight Captain. Now a common swordsman."

Shu:
"The Orange Army welcomes you both. Lord Riou, we must return immediately. I don't know how much longer we can evade the notice of the Greenhill Army."

[Fade to Genkaku Castle, outside of the Great Hall.]

Upon entering the Great Hall:

Nanami:
"Whew. I feel sort of relieved to be back here. I guess it's because this is where I want to live..."

Shu:
"Lord Riou. We weren't able to form an alliance with the Matilda Knights, but we got many new recruits. However the Highland Army isn't just sitting idly by either. They're going to come at us again sooner or later. This is just a brief rest.... Starting tomorrow, we'll have to fight again."
