In the Toto shrine:
Your party here is made up of Riou (Hero), Jowy, Nanami, Pilika, and three characters randomly selected by the game. (This playthrough, the random characters were Shiro, Mukumuku, and Millie, which means there will be bits not spoken in human language.)
Jowy:
"So here you are Pilika. Why did you..... ................? What is it? Is something there?"
Pilika walks toward the stone tablet.
Pilika:
"......................."
Jowy:
"Oh yeah...now I remember. Marx, Pilika's father...his job was taking care of some shrine.... This must be the place...."
Jowy walks up to the stone.
Jowy:
".......What's this? Something's inscribed here. Riou, take a look at this."
Riou steps forward.
Jowy:
"This writing...it says.... 'My friend and I seal our thoughts here. We deeply regret that we could not make them one.' --Han, Genkaku" This Genkaku, could it be Master Genkaku? What does this mean?"
Riou takes another step closer to Jowy and the stone. An exclamation point appears over Pilika's head and she jumps.
Pilika:
"..................!!!"
Riou and Jowy disappear in a flash of light and reappear in another part of the cave. (They've also switched places. Riou was on Jowy's right, but now he's on his left.)
Jowy:
"What is this?"
They look around.
Jowy:
"Inside the shrine?....... But why are we inside....?"
Leknaat appears.
Leknaat:
"You who follow the Path of Fate...... Heralds who summon the Stars of Destiny. Go forward. To weave your destiny, you must first attain them."
She disappears.
Jowy:
"Huh? What was that? We're supposed to go forward?"
They walk forward, down a long tunnel, and into...
Riou and Jowy's Excellent Hallucination:
(All of the hallucination scenes are in sepia tones.)
The screen goes white.
Power?
Am I looking for Power?
Fade to scene of young Nanami and Riou training with Genkaku in front of the dojo. Riou turns, startled, and sees young Jowy standing at the fence watching them. Riou walks toward him.
Lil Riou:
"Who are you?"
Jowy sweattles.
Lil Jowy:
"I... I'm Jowy."
Fade to white.
Ever since the first day I saw you...
Fade to scene of Kyaro Town. Young Riou and Jowy stand facing three other children.
Children:
"Nya nya nya nya nya nya! Hey adopted kid! Hey coward's son! Your daddy's dojo is a dump!"
"Don't come here Riou, We might catch your coward's disease!"
Lil Riou:
"..................."
Lil Jowy:
"Stop it!!! If you're gonna make fun of Riou, you can take me on!"
Fade to same scene with Riou and Jowy on the ground.
Children:
"Now you won't talk so big! Adopted coward's son and little rich kid! Ha ha ha ha ha!"
They start to walk away.
Young Nanami comes running up to them steaming. They look frightened of her. They zoom off. She follows.
Lil Nanami (off-screen):
"Hey!! Wait you little creeps!!"
Lil Jowy:
"..... Are you okay, Riou?"
Fade to white.
I somehow knew that we would be friends....
Fade to scene outside of the Blight rural estate in Kyaro. An Afghan Hound comes running across the wide, well-tended lawn. After the dog runs completely across the screen, the view scrolls up to show a soldier guarding the gate. Young Riou and Jowy sneak in behind him, then run along the outside of the high brick wall in the same direction the dog ran. We see the top of their heads as they jump and try to peek over the wall. After a moment, they back away from the wall, then Riou runs toward it for a running jump. Even that doesn't work. He looks at Jowy and goes back to the wall. A moment later, his head pops over the edge. Jowy must be holding him up.
Lil Jowy:
"Hurry up! My hands are getting tired!"
Riou sweattles.
Lil Riou:
"Just...just a little more...."
Lil Jowy:
"Can you see her? Isn't she cute?"
Lil Riou:
"Huh? Huh?"
Lil Jowy:
"Hurry up!"
Lil Riou:
"Just another..."
Screen scrolls to reveal the Afghan sprawled and wagging its tail next to a little girl who is obviously Jillia. Jillia is holding a book. The dog lifts its head, and Jillia turns from her book and pets the dog. She blinks a few times. The dog wags its tail even more, then launches itself into Jillia's lap, sending the book flying. Jillia hugs the dog and pets it. There is more tail-wagging.
Screen scrolls back to the wall. The guard comes up behind the boys.
Guard:
"Hey! What are you doing up there?!"
Riou jumps back from the wall.
Lil Jowy:
"Uh oh! Let's scram!"
They run.
Fade to white.
I was never lonely because you were there
Fade to scene of the large tree out behind the dojo. Jowy and Riou are covering a hole up with dirt.
Lil Jowy:
"Okay good.. Remember, it's a secret."
Lil Riou:
"Okay."
Nanami runs up to them. She grabs the front of Riou's shirt and starts shaking him.
Lil Nanami:
"Hey hey what were you doing? C'mon tell me!"
Lil Riou:
"Well you see..."
Lil Jowy:
"Hey!! You're not allowed to tell!"
Lil Nanami:
"What what? C'mon....it's okay..."
Lil Jowy:
"No. It's a secret between boys."
Nanami steams and shoves Riou at Jowy. She kicks the ground.
Lil Nanami:
"Bleh!"
Fade to white.
It felt like those days would last forever...
Fade to the Unicorn Brigade standing in front of their headquarters. Riou and Jowy are in the front row of boys.
Rowd:
"From today you're all members of the Royal Highland Army's Unicorn Brigade. Hold up your heads with pride!"
Screen scrolls to show Nanami hiding behind a bush and watching.
Fade to white.
We walked along the same paths because....
Fade to scene from Tenzan Pass earlier in the game. It'll show whatever dialogue choices you made earlier. Jowy slashes one part of the X mark.
Jowy:
"If we make it...... but...somehow get sepearated.... Let's return to this spot. That way we'll be reunited. Promise me....Riou....."
(This playthrough, I didn't promise him.)
Riou:
"Forget it...we'll make it together."
Jowy:
"Fine. Then this mark is my prayer that we make it together."
Jowy makes the second mark. They walk to the cliff, grab hands, and jump.
Fade to white.
We chose Life and Death together.....
Fade to scene from the fort's cell earlier in the game. Again, it'll show whatever dialogue choices you made earlier.
Jowy:
"Riou! If you're here, answer me! Riou!!!"
Riou:
"I'm here Jowy!!!"
Fade to white.
I believed in you....always....
Fade to scene outside Kyaro Town from earlier in the game. Same thing about dialogue choices.
Nanami:
"Riou, Jowy..... I wonder if we'll..... ever come back here again..."
Jowy:
"........................"
Riou:
"We'll be back some day."
Fade to white.
because we shared so much.....
(...including our hallucinations...)
Fade to another part of the shrine.
Jowy:
"Huh? What was that... a hallucination? Riou, did you see it too? What was it?"
Leknaat reappears.
Leknaat:
"Young followers of Destiny... We have looked into your hearts and witnessed your 'character'."
Jowy:
"You're the one from before! Who are you!"
Leknaat:
"I am the inheritor of the 'Gate Rune'. The keeper of the gates between worlds. She who watches the great scales of Fate. Here begins the gathering of the Stars of Destiny. Fate quivers, the future cannot be seen. One of the '27 true runes' has recognized you. Oh followers of Destiny, the path is now open for you."
(Leknaat's certainly not one for giving short answers.)
Jowy:
"Recognized us...is that what that vision was?"
Leknaat:
"Yes. The rune recognized you. The 'Rune of Beginning', which lies sleeping beyond here, is needed to complete your Destiny. Stand before the runes and hold up your right hands. You will be granted power to alter fate. Think, and then decide. 'Power' will not grant you peace. The storms of Fate cause misery for many and few will ne able to calm them once they start. If you do not desire 'Power', return now to the world outside."
Jowy:
"Power......... ....rune......... The power of the the 27 true runes...."
(Yes, I know. No, I didn't put the extra "the" in there.)
Jowy:
".................. What will you do, Riou?"
Riou:
[x] "Since we need 'power'....."
[ ] "I don't need 'power'."
Jowy:
"Riou....... Let's take a look. I just want to see what kind of 'power' it is......"
"Riou. I'm taking the cave to the right. You go to the left."
They go to their assigned caves.
Jowy:
"This is it. Riou! Can you hear me? Are you ready?"
Riou:
[x] (Raise your right hand)
[ ] (Wait a minute)
Jowy:
"I...... There are people I want to protect, and so I need power."
They raise their hands and get the runes.
Jowy:
"Now... I have....power...... The power of the rune..... .................... Now I have a chance...."
"Okay. Let's go back."
(I think the 'power' they received was the power to say power without having to use the single quotation marks... No, really. Check it out. All those mysterious single quotation marks are gone now. Amazing, isn't it?)
They return to Leknaat.
Leknaat:
"You have been granted the power. Riou, you have the Bright Shield Rune. Jowy, you have the Black Sword Rune. They are the two aspects of the Rune of Beginning. Go now. Go and write you own fates."
They are returned to their companions.
Shiro:
"Awoooooooo......"
Millie:
"Huh? What's going on?"
Jowy:
"A dream.....? I don't think it was a dream. Riou, show me your right hand."
"So it wasn't a dream after all."
Mukumuku:
"Mook? Mook?"
Jowy:
"Yeah.....I'm okay."
(I am so impressed with Jowy! He knows the mute language of ellipses and the language of Flying Squirrels!)
Pilika:
"...................."
Jowy:
"We're okay, Pilika. Right, Riou?"
"Let's go. We don't know when the Highland Army will come here. And we have to go on...."
