Pohl:
"The Highland Army is coming!!!!! Everyone gather in the square!!!!"

[Fade to Riou waking up in his room. Jowy enters.]

Jowy:
"Did you hear? They've finally arrived."

[They leave. Stop by and talk to Leona.]

Leona:
"Listen, if things get dangerous, just run away. That's the smart, adult thing to do."

Ah, but we're not smart! Or adult!

[Go outside. Tsai, Viktor, Flik, and Apple face a group of mercenary soldiers. Riou and company joins in the ranks with the soldiers.]

Viktor:
"Everyone listen up!!!!! According to the sentries, the Highland Army is headed this way. Get ready for a fierce battle."

Apple:
"We set a few traps on the way. That'll hurt them a little."

Tsai:
"The Fire Spears are ready. Thanks to everyone who worked through the night to fix them."

Flik:
"If this fort falls, this whole area will be Highland territory. You all know what happened to Toto and Ryube village. This battle must not be lost!!!"

[The soldiers jump in unison.]

Soldiers:
"Hey!!!"

Viktor:
"Okay Apple, explain our battle plan."

Apple:
"According to Flik, the support from Muse will arrive in about 10 days. If we can hold out until then, we've got a chance of winning. Our main strategy is defense, but first we'll attack from here. This will frustrate them and weaken their offense. After that we just have to defend our fort and wait for help. That's all."

Viktor:
"Everyone understand? Good!! In the name of the great lion on our flag, let's save our fort!!!"

[Screen scrolls up for a look at Viktor's flag. Scrolls back down. Question marks pop up over three of the soldiers' heads.]

Apple:
"That thing is a lion?"

Flik:
"...................."

[Fade to scene in front of the fort. Everyone is milling about now.]

Viktor:
"Are you two ready?"

Riou:
[x] "We're not quite ready..."
[ ] "We're ready anytime."

Viktor:
"Hurry up. The enemy's not going to wait for you."

Ah, but it does!

Flik:
"What is is, Riou? Stay near me when the fighting starts."

Viktor:
"Are you ready yet? There's not much time!"

Riou:
[ ] "We're not quite ready..."
[x] "We're ready anytime."

Viktor:
"Good. I've got high hopes for you."

[A soldier runs up to them.]

Soldier:
"I see them! The Highland Army!!!"

Viktor:
"Alright. Let's go!"


Battle screen:

I think some of the Highland commanders are pretty cool, so I'll be including bits of battle dialogue. The battles are otherwise pretty darn boring.

Solon Jhee:
"Soon we'll be able to see their fort. I bet they're shivering like little mice. Okay, let's finish this before Lord Luca comes!!!"

I love Solon's hair. It's too bad we don't get to see much of him...

Culgan:
"Don't be reckless. You might lose your head."

Ah... the foreshadowing...

Seed:
"I agree we should finish them before Luca comes. Otherwise we might not get a chance. Right, Culgan?"

Culgan:
"It's unwise to take foolish risks. Better conserve your strength until it's needed."

Seed:
"How boring!!! An opportunity missed is an opportunity wasted!"

[Our guys enter the battle screen.]

Apple:
"The enemy has underestimated us. Let's attack quickly!"

[Battle commences. After a bit:]

Solon Jhee:
"A surprise attack, huh. Let's rout these mercenary scum!!"

[Comments throughout the battle:]

Seed:
"What are those weapons they've got?! Don't get too close!!"

Culgan:
"Fire Spears!.... But how did they....."

Flik:
"These Fire Spears are powerful weapons all right!"

Viktor:
"See? You should thank me for saving them."

Flik:
"Nobody's listening."

Did you know you could fry your own allies with the Fire Spears?

Solon Jhee:
"Fools!! We've got to retreat and reposition our troops!!!"

[They retreat.]

Viktor:
"Hurray!! We did it!!! Thanks to those Fire Spears!"

Jowy:
"Good job, Riou!"


Back at the fort:

[Fade to scene in front of fort. Riou, Viktor, Flik, Apple, and a couple soldiers are there.]

Viktor:
"It looks like your first battle was a victory. We've earned ourselves a short rest."

Apple:
"The Highland Army is tired from a long campaign. They'll probably attack again tomorrow or later, after they rest their troops."

Think again!

[A soldier runs up to the group.]

Soldier:
"The Highland Army!! The Highland soldiers are attacking again!!!"

[An exclamation point appears over Apple's head.]

Apple:
"What!!! That's insane! Forcing his exhausted troops to attack again."

Viktor:
"..That Luca Blight is full of surprises. This...this could be bad..."

Flik:
"Well, all we can do is fight. We can't let them win."

Viktor:
"Okay. Is everyone ready?"

Riou:
[ ] "Wait a minute."
[x] "Ready."

Viktor:
"Don't forget, the other side is tired too!"


Battle screen:

Kiba:
"I'm General Kiba, commander of the 3rd Royal Highland Company. I fight for the honor of Agares Blight, King of Highland."

Solon Jhee:
"I'm General Solon Jhee of the 2nd Royal Highland!! You shamed me in the last battle, but it won't happen again!!"

Viktor:
"Nobody leave the fort! We've got to defend this place at all cost!"

Flik:
"Here they come!"

[Battle commences. After a bit:]

Viktor:
"The Fire Spears! Damn! They're not working anymore!!!"

[More enemy forces appear.]

Viktor:
"Wh...what?"

Apple:
"I can't believe it!... How could such a big army pass through the forest....."

Luca Blight:
"Idiots!! Follow me! Let's crush them!!!"

Viktor:
"Crap!!!! This can't......"

Apple:
"It...it's... It's all my fault....."

Luca Blight:
"Hoo hoo hoo ha ha ha!!!!!! Fools!!!! Destroy them all!!!!!"

[Battle ends in defeat. Fade to black.]


Back at the fort:

[Scattered bodies of mercenary soldiers litter the grounds.]

Viktor:
"Harumph. It looks like we never had a chance."

Flik:
"The fort is lost. Everybody! Split up and run away!"

[Flik and Viktor leave the screen.]

Jowy:
"Are you hurt, Riou? It looks like you're okay. Good..... Oh no! Pilika. We've got to save Pilika!! Come with me, Riou?"

Riou:
[x] "I'll go with you."
[ ] "I'm getting out of here."

Jowy:
"Thanks, Riou. Let's go."

[They go into the fort, having to stop for some battles with Highlanders along the way. If you run to the basement, you'll find Flik and Viktor standing near some spears in the armory.]

Flik:
"Riou, it's dangerous to be here. Hurry and get away."

Viktor:
"You run ahead. Us? Don't worry. We've got a few good ideas."

[Enter the meeting room. Pohl, Pilika, and Luca Blight are there. Luca approaches Pohl and draws his sword.]

Luca:
"Spineless worms. He was worried about taking on these guys?"

I wonder who "he" is.

Pohl:
"Eeeyaaah!! He...help...."

Luca:
"I'm so sick of hearing that! State pigs....."

[He kills Pohl.]

Is it just me or does the Suikoden series really enjoy killing off friendly, auburn-haired characters who you meet early in the game?

Pilika:
"Waaa, Waaaaaaaaahhhh!!! Waaaaaaaaannnnnnn!!!!"

Luca:
"Shut up, brat!!! You're spoiling my fun!!!"

Riou:
[x] "Save her."
[ ] "Don't save her."

Pilika:
"Waaaaah!! Don't...don't......."

Luca:
"Brat!! I'll shut your mouth for good!!"

[He raises his sword. Riou and Jowy dash and stop him.]

Luca:
"What? You're here to save this kid?"

[Luca throws them off.]

Luca:
"Ha! Brave words indeed! Let me tell you something. There are weak men and strong men in this world. The strong men take everything and the weak men die. That's how the world was designed. Now I will show you how it works, weaklings!!!"

Jowy:
"Stop!!!"

Luca:
"......................"

Jowy:
"S...stop!!!!!"

Luca:
"Sit quietly and watch worms!!! So what if you save this girl? Better that you think of your last words, because you're next!!"
"Hey, brat! What is it? Can't talk?! Hoo hoo ha ha ha!!!! Relax! I've chopped hundreds, thousands of necks. I can do it with my eyes closed."

Jowy:
"S...stop...STOP!!!!!"

Luca:
"Hoo hoo hoo ha ha ha!!!! I love those eyes!! So weak, so filled with fear!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!! God, I love this!!!"

[He raises his sword.]

Pilika:
"eek............."

[The room is rocked with an explosion and everything turns red. Flik and Viktor run in. Flik runs straight to Pilika.]

Viktor:
"Over here!!! Hurry and come!!!"

[They run towards the door. Flik brings Pilika to Jowy.]

Viktor:
"I threw all of the Fire Spears into the broiler in the basement. They'll blow any minute."

Flik:
"See. Next time protect 'em better."

Is this comment made to Jowy? Or is it another crack about Viktor and his toys?

Viktor:
"Hurry. Run!!! If you make it, go to Muse. We can relax there. Hurry! Don't die now!"

[Riou, Jowy, and Pilika leave.]

Luca:
"Why you annoying little..."

Viktor:
"You won't get your dirty hands on my fort. Next time I won't lose either!"

[Flik and Viktor leave.]

Luca:
"Wait!!!!!"

[The room is shaken by another explosion.]

Luca:
"You!!!.... I'll make you regret the fact that you survived this day!!!"

[Fade to FMV of running through the woods. One person stops, looks back, and sees the final burst of flames from the fort.]


Path leaving the fort:

[Your party is made up of Riou, Jowy, Nanami, Pilika, and three characters randomly chosen by the computer.]

Jowy:
"Are you okay, Pilika?"

Pilika:
"...............   ....................   ................"

Jowy:
"What is it, Pilika? ...Hey.......Pilika?"

Pilika:
"ee................   ................... ooo.....oooo........"

Jowy:
"Pilika? Pilika? She...she can't talk...."

Pilika:
"aaa.........ooo........."
"eee................"

Jowy:
"Answer me, Pillika...... Please....Pillika...... Call me 'uncle' again...."

Yes, the spelling of Pilika's name has suddenly changed.

Riou:
[x] "Don't worry. She's just in shock."
[ ] "Luca couldn't have........"

Jowy:
"...You're right... I'll bet you're right.... She'll be okay...I'm sure of it."

Pilika:
".................."

She's a noisy lil bugger for someone who's mute.

Jowy:
"Pilika........ ..................... Riou........ This place isn't safe. Let's hurry ahead. Viktor said we could relax in Muse City. It looks like we have to go there."

From this point forth, Jowy will be talking in ellipses a lot more. I think he's doing it so that he speaks Pilika's new language...
