Kings lose heartbreaker in O.T.

On Wednesday night the Gas Kings began their playoff drive against the Irma Aces. The Gas Kings came storming out of the gate and took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Shawn Pettigrew and Matt Suchodolski. However, mistakes cost them and the Aces scored three strait goals in the first before Braden Appleby tied it before the period was over. In the second period the teams traded goals and once again the game was tied going into the third. With less than five minutes left in the period Shaun Kozun capitalized on the powerplay and the Kings seemed poised to take game 1 but with 15 seconds left and the extra attacker out for the Aces they tied it up forcing overtime. With five minutes gone in the extra frame there was a scrum in front of the Gas Kings net and goaltender Tynan Smysniuk looked to have the puck covered for a good three seconds but the Aces jammed away, got the puck loose and blatantly kicked the puck in the net. The Officials gathered to discuss the play but the goal stood and the Aces stole game 1 6-5. "It was one of the worst calls I've ever seen, next to the penalty shot called in game 4 of the finals in double overtime last year," said Smysniuk after the game. When asked about the injury, Smysniuk replied, "I'm fine, i could have played the rest of the season if we were still battling for home ice in the playoffs, but the extra week off helped not only the injury, but gave the rest of my body some rest too." Game 2 of the series will be played Friday night in Killam at 8:30pm, after the teams will travel back to Irma for Game 3 the following night.
