Welcome to Our Website

ViewPoint Medical is a development-stage company intending to become the leading company focused exclusively on securing and maintaining an open patient airway in anesthesia, critical care, and emergency medicine. Founded originally in 1997 as an investment spinoff of the Ohmeda Division of the BOC Group, ViewPoint Medical recently concluded a new investment round with a California health care company, who will exclusively distribute ViewPoint products worldwide. Business Focus

ViewPoint Medical intends to market an optimal set of tools for tracheal intubation and airway management. The core of this tool set is AerolightÔ, a proprietary intubating device capable of performing all intubations, both easy and difficult. The only instrument generally recognized as having this potential is the flexible fiber-optic bronchoscope, frequently adapted to intubation as a "flexible fiber-optic laryngoscope" or "intubating fiberscope". Even though this device is widely accepted as the gold standard device for difficult intubation, a number of limitations prevent it from being generally used for more routine intubation. These include the following:

ViewPoint Medical has concentrated on overcoming these limitations in an effort to provide a low-cost, high-quality intubating fiberscope that has unique design features that give it a high probability of being rapidly adopted for difficult intubations, and for many questionable, and more routine, intubations as its use becomes more standardized. This device will also find utility for confirming placement of endotracheal tubes placed by conventional means, placing double-lumen and other specialized airway management devices, and potentially for intubations performed by less skilled users such as paramedics.

Specific features of AerolightÔ include:

Strategy

AerolightÔ will initially be sold as a lower-cost, easier-to-use alternative to the conventional intubating fiberscope for difficult intubation and other airway management procedures where a fiber-optic laryngoscope might be used, such as placing double-lumen tubes, confirming tube placement, and the like. A market need for such a lower-cost fiberscope is well recognized. Due to the much lower price point and very desirable feature set, it is expected that there will be a rapid uptake by this market.

Once a given institution has several of the instruments, its ease of use and low cost of repair will allow its use for more routine intubations for training purposes and to practice the techniques of use. This secondary training and practice market, while small now, will increase significantly due to the low cost of ownership and targeted feature set of AerolightÔ.

As users become more comfortable with AerolightÔ in these more routine settings, a third much larger market opens up. As a base of users highly skilled in the use of the intubating fiberscope increases, there will be corresponding increasing use of AerolightÔ for routine intubation as a less traumatic alternative to rigid laryngoscopes. This last market is the most difficult to quantify, but is potentially very significant. We at ViewPoint Medical are very excited about this potential.

Future Products

ViewPoint Medical expects to market a number of additional optimal products to complement AerolightÔ. These products include an innovative light source intended to assist both use and storage of AerolightÔ, a number of disposable accessories for AerolightÔ that will extend its usefulness to additional patient populations, and several disposable airway management products optimized for intubation with the intubating fiberscope.
