1842

August 1 H D Kemp took over the duties of Postmaster at Melb.

2 Trustees appointed for the erection of an Episcopalian schoolhouse at Geelong also to be used as a place of worship. They comprised N A Fenwick, E B Addis, Charles Sladen, Frederick Champion and William Roadknight.

11 The Melbourne Strangers Fund Society was formed with Dr J Patterson as chairman.

20 The Portland Guardian and Normanby General Advertiser was issued - printed and published by Thomas Wilkinson and James Swords, Gawler St. Weekly.

30 La Trobe appointed residents to perform the duties of Mayor, Alderman, Assessors and Town Clerk until such officers had been officially elected. William Lonsdale was selected as Mayor, F B StJohn, J D Pinnock, S Raymond, R Hoddle as aldermen. The assessors were A Cunninghame, J S Griffin, G S Airey, W B Wilmot, P E Cussen, R S Webb, R Barry and R H Bunbury. The Town Clerk was H F Gurner. La Trobe appointed W R Belcher, D F Laing, J J Mouritz and H Richardson as Collectors. The collectors compiled The List of Burgesses which comprised every adult male, who was not an alien, had not received public relief, and had no children in a charitable institution and who had for 1 year occupied premises in the town or within 7 miles of it, of the annual value of 25 pounds.

31 The Portland Mercury and Normanby Advertiser was issued edited by Joseph Thompson, printed by Robert Fisher and published by him at the offices, Gawler St for the joint benefit of William Kerr of Melb and Joseph Thompson and Robert Fisher. Weekly

September 22 The selection of a site for the township of Alberton announced by Gipps.

27 Alastair Mackenzie deputy sheriff arrived from Liverpool in the Ocean.

October 2 St James Church opened by Rev Adam Compton Thomson.

3 Mrs William Willoughby, formerly Mrs John Batman, applied for a grant of land for herself and children and for some of the latter to be admitted into the Orphan School in Sydney. Gipps refused her requests.

31 A site for the village of St Kilda was announced 'on the sea coast about 3 miles from North Melbourne and a mile eastward from the present landing on the beach'

November 17 A meeting of the Portland Cricket Club held at John Cronin's Golden Fleece Inn with William Frost as secretary.

23 The Geelong Benevolent Society formed.

26 A cricket match was played at Brighton between Brighton and Melbourne Cricket Clubs. W B Andrew held the scoring book. Brighton won.

27 The first Roman Catholic Chapel at Geelong was opened by Father Michael Stephens who soon opened a day school.

30 Rev A C Thomson opened a little stone building at Brighton, erected at the expense of Henry Dendy and Jonathan Binns Were, as a schoolroom and temporary place of worship.

December 1 The first municipal election in Melbourne was held. The councillors elected were- La Trobe Ward (Sth east) Andrew Russell, Daniel Stodhart Campbell, George James Lonsdale Ward (south west) John Orr, Henry William Mortimer, John Pascoe Fawkner Gipps Ward (north east) Henry Condell, John Dickson, George Beaver Bourke Ward (north west) John Thomas Smith, John Patterson, William Kerr

7 The first sale of crown lands at St Kilda. The area was bounded by the Esplanade, Robe St, Grey St and Fitzroy St. Suburban allotments at South Melbourne and Sandridge were withdrawn from sale by order of Capt Lonsdale.

27 William Weston Howe appointed the first Town Surveyor.

STATISTICS FOR 1842

ESTIMATED POPULATION as at 31 December 1842 - 23,799 15691 male and 8108 females 6100 immigrants arrived by sea of whom 4136 came under the Bounty System General Revenue 87,296 pounds and expenditure 124,631 pounds. 237 vessels arrived and 225 sailed Live stock - 4065 horses, 100,792 cattle and 1,404,333 sheep 2,828,784 lbs of wool were produced valued at 151,446 pounds.
