The name Agricola is Latin for "farmer". Gnaeus Julius Agricola, a Roman General was Governor of Britannia from AD77/8 to 83/4. He was the first of the Romans to discover the fact that Britain is surrounded by water. In AD84 his unprecedented successes incurred the attention of the emperor Domitian, who, perhaps jealous of his success, ordered him back to Rome, and retired him.

Agricola's first voyage took her to Rio Janeiro and Calcutta and back to London, then to Port Phillip and Calcutta and thence back to London.

On 31 Jan 1843 the Agricola was at the port of Liverpool, having returned from Calcutta and the Thames, then on to Liverpool in ballast. She was entering the King's Dock basin into which the pilot intended to take her, when she collided with the Don which was being docked. From "Reports of cases argued and determined in the High Court of Admiralty", the Court case ended with Judge finding the collision was the result of the misconduct of the pilot, the Owners cannot be made responsible.

The Agricola made four other trips to Australia with Bounty emigrants between 1843 and 1856.
On 25 May 1848 left the Downs and arrived at Sydney 11 Sep 1848 with 31 named passengers Mr and Mrs Clifford, Mr Fryer, Mr and Mrs Willis and 3 children, Mr and Mrs Kirk, Miss Holly, Mr and Mrs Samuel, Mr and Mrs Davis, Mrs Jacobs, Miss Isaacs, Master Myers, Mr and Mrs Bower and child, Miss Weller, Mr King, Mrs Fitzgerald and child, Mr Fisher, Mr Barber, Mr Campbell, Mr Woodward, Mr Spencer, Mr Hamilton.

20 Oct 1849 the Agricola arrived at Sydney from the Downs on 21 June 1849.
On 16 Jan 1850 the Maitland Mercury, reported, Page 2, the Agricola barque, 564 tons, Bell, was laid on at Sydney for London loaded with 100 tons ship-building timber, 4000 horns, 25 tons bones, 2179 hides, 32 tons sperm oil, 19 casks tallow, 6000 treenails, and 1673 bales wool. On 19 Jan 1850 the Agricola, now rated as 565 tons and 1814 bales of wool, was cleared for London, with Passengers Miss King, Mr L Hunt, Mr McDonald, Mr Black and Dr Wheatley

15 Dec 1851 Agricola arrived at Sydney, barque, John Bell Master, Burthen 564 tons, from the Port of London to Port Jackson, having sailed 18 Aug 1851 from the Downs. She has 21 crew and the Steerage Passengers named are George Beaumont died 20 Aug 1851, Mr and Mrs Shipman, Mrs Cleveland, Samuel Morris, Nathan Solomon and John Robson.

26 Jun 1853 the Agricola, barque (564 tons) Master J Bell, left Moreton Bay to Sydney 6 Jul 1853 which can be found using the NSW Records for Moreton Bay. This list of Assisted passengers names each member of each family. Cabin passengers Mrs Russell with child and servant, Miss Bundock and Mr Bundock, Mrs Dear and child, Mr Raff and Dr Clegg.
