Greetings from Corozal Town in Sunny Belize on the east coast of Central America. The Clerics of St. Viator, Chicago Province, better known as the Viatorians began this mission in September of 1998. We are a Roman Catholic religious community of Priests and Brothers serving around the world. This parish, St. Francis Xavier, was founded back in the middle of the last century in what was formerly British Honduras. We are in the northern most district of Belize, which borders on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. In fact, the main parish church is only about six miles from the border. English is the official language of the country, but in this part of the country Spanish is widely spoken and in a few villages, Mayan is the language in the home. Being a religious community with an emphasis on education, we are responsible for the administration of twenty catholic schools throughout the parish with a total of 5,000 students in primary education. We have 189 paid teachers on the staff and numerous volunteers. Naturally, as a parish, there are the numerous sacramental programs that every parish has, but multiplied many times to meet the needs of our 25,000 parishioners. Some live in villages as far away as two hours by car from the parish church. We cover all 22 of our villages to make sure that they have regular access to the sacraments. Since some basic human needs are lacking here we do a lot to help meet their food, clothing and medical needs as well.
