With the season just beginning, the North Stars quickly jumped to a 1-0 record. Their first ever game was a killing of Vancouver, outshooting the opponent 28-18. Penalties were on their side this game, with many dumb penalties being taken by the Canucks. The North Stars ended up winning the game 4-0 with Terry Sawchuk recording the league's first ever shutout. The entire team was extatic over the victory, while GM Craig Waldick made it clear that while he was pleased with the showing, he still believed the team could be further improved. Everybody was anxious for the next game, and now complaints came when coach decided to keep the team after for a "strategy" meeting.

Several moves have been made in the preseason, including moves that would have Steve Thomas (who both came and left), Marc Johson and Krystof Zdybiki packing their bags. Acquisitions included Terry Sawchuk, who recorded the league's first shut out, Dean Prentice, who's paperwork did not go through in time and was forced to play in Vancouver against Minneapolis, and Pat Verbeek, who was one of four goal scorers in the first game (set up by GM/coach/player Craig Waldick).
