Background:  This campaign, like Laerrigan's, is set in a world that melds the Forgotten Realms with a loosely-inspired version of Westeros (from George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire).

When an unknown noblewoman gave birth to a changeling, the baby served as visible proof that she had been deceived by a doppelganger.  She wanted the child drowned, but a house servant stole him and sold him to an assassin's guild, where a changeling's disguise ability would be a great asset.  Caden was raised by that guild, spending months or years at a time under the direct mentoring of one member or another, traveling far and wide, learning the art of deception.
Recently, he was on his way (taking his time about it) back to a guild contact point after an assignment, when he was somehow found and identified by a much more powerful and dangerous group of assassins.  They made it very clear how easily they could find him again regardless of how he may run or hide, and they made him an offer:  kill the imposter who's taken Prince Joffrey's place and receive adequate payment, or die.
Caden figures that if his own guild learns how easily he was found by these men, they may just kill him before these others can do it.  And if he does manage to kill the imposter and his guild finds out who did it, they'll probably assume he took an outside assignment under the table to undercut their prices and clientele (especially with suspicions roused by the honestly accidental death of his guild partner on his last assignment).  His life has taken a definite turn toward inconvenience.  But at least he'll get to kill someone for it.

Notes:  Caden didn't normally return to a guild contact alone.  He was never sent out on solo assignments, but always with a longstanding and capable guildmember alongside him with a device allowing true seeing.  The guild may have done everything it could to instill a sense of indebtedness and prevent any personal ambition, but few members ever really trusted a creature with such a natural knack for deception who enjoyed his job a little too much and who obviously chafed under strict guidelines.  On this last official assignment, Caden's "partner" ran afoul of honest bad luck and was killed by a simple snake while camping beside the road.  Caden loves irony.
A lazy sociopath with just a touch of arrogance to hide deep-seated insecurities, Caden revels in riding the waves of chance and seeing where they take him, even to his own detriment at times.  He's never before made an attempt on someone with a prince's level of security, so there's a certain inescapable allure to his unwanted quest, and of course this time he's being sent out on assignment without a watchdog partner (a situation which promises some interesting possibilities).  Add to that the fact that it's some kind of shapechanger impersonating Joffrey, and Caden hates shapechangers in general because most are better at it than he, and this really isn't as inconvenient an assignment as he'd first imagined...

Like some warlocks, Caden took an interest in the notion of a familiar.  Mostly because he has this unreasoning love for cats in general.  Now he has a cat of his own that he can communicate with, and that won't ever leave.  Isn't that just so sweet?

Tilly is affectionate toward everyone, but Caden is her favorite, when it comes down to it.  Her big, fluffy self is Caden's teddy bear at night.  He never had one as a child...

read two short scenarios that show this character as he was originally meant to be (before compromises for the sake of setting and playability).  Take that, Entreri  >;-)
