VCU uPDaTe  WeEk 1 Games Ending September 8, 2008

YER IGGLES.

We spent the entire off-season carping about the lack of a true number one wide receiver.  So what happens in week one?  With our number one and number two guys out of the lineup, three of the four scrubbie WRs get more than 100 yards receiving as the Birds pummel the Rams, 38-3.   What can we take from that game?  Well, although DMac and Dsean and our pass Dfense got a lot of credit, you could argue that the game was won in the trenches.  Donovan had all day to sit in the pocket, while Bulger was harassed all day long.  Which takes us to….

STINKING COWBOYS.

“America’s Team” (aka, the team for frontrunning weasel cockroaches) beat Cleveland and is now a 7-point favorite over the Birds for Monday nite.  I gotta confess, there is a lot of talent on that team. Results this early may not mean much come December, but this is a great early test for both teams. No matter the outcome, Romo remains the most overrated QB in football.  Stinkin’ Cowboys.  It won’t be the greatest show on turf this game; we’re calling for a low-scoring affair where Westbrook, not DeSean, is the star.

HEY, HOW ABOUT THEM PHILS?

They are fading at the wrong time. Still, give some credit to the Mutts, who had a billion reasons to fold.  Get yourself up to see Shea before the wrecking ball does.

CULTURE CORNER.

Baseball fan and rock music fan?  You can hardly do better than the new release by “The Baseball Project” entitled “Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails.”  An Amazon review says The brainchild of Seattle musicians Steve Wynn and Scott McCaughey (with assistance for REM's Peter Buck and drummer Linda Pitmon), this CD is way more than a cute exercise in nostalgia. In turns ribald ("Ted F---ing Williams"), bitter ("Gratitude [for Curt Flood]), nostalgic ("Sometimes I Dream Of Willie Mays"), and rueful ("Long Before My Time"), Frozen Ropes successfully and accessibly makes the case that baseball isn't that much different from everyday life, reminding us in "Harvey Haddix" that "We're drawn to tragic stories/The ones that suit us best."

EATING THINGS.

So much good food out there, why are you eating at Pizza Hut?  September is the horn of plenty for the local harvest, but we’re not yet weary of those precious summer vegetables that we’d pay a ransom for come February. There is yet time to get to a farmer’s market to score some heirloom tomatoes (the cracked and ugly ones) for awesome tomato sangawitches. This year, an amazing new treat has come up on our radar – the astonishing MIRAI corn.  It comes in yellow or bi-color, and it just SMOKES any other corn on the cob you’ve ever had.  Confront your local farm stand and demand they grow some for next year.  This year, it can still be found at PETE’s PRODUCE in West Chester on Rt. 926.  www.petesproducefarm.com
