We met, We joined,

and we florished and so did our Dog Club ! (Created 10/11/99 by rt) (updated 11/16/05 rt)

The Ventura County Dog Fanciers was incorporated on September 7, 1935 by a group of hard working, dedicated, pure-bred dog breeders and show people.   M. L. Ley was President, M. Greenburg was Secretary, Dr. E. H. Houchin, Ruby Houchin, and D. E. Ley were Directors. I have heard that the first Ventura County Dog Fanciers Assoc. sponsored Dog Show was in 1929, but I  do not have conformation of that. People that I remember as being in the club for a long time when I joined in 1970 were: Grace and Jim Jaquish, Grace and Bud Wilson, Barbara and Owen Derryberry, Elaine and Bill Bergum, Neil Cannon and many more.  In the '70's this club enjoyed the status of one of the nations largest shows. Those of us involved in the club now are very grateful to the pioneers of the Ventura County Dog Fanciers Assoc.

In 1935 the First Annual All Breed Dog Show of the Ventura County Dog Fanciers Assoc. was held at The Auditorium, Seaside Park, Ventura, CA on Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28. Officers of the Club:  Dr. Thomas Rundle-President, Mr.M.L.Ley-First Vice President, Mrs. Braden Finch-Second Vice President, Mr. E.A. Weir-Treasurer, Grayce Greenburg-Secretary, Bench Show Committee:  Dr. Thomas Rundle - Chairman Judges:  (Saturday) Mrs. C.H. Jachson, Jr. of Santa Barbara, CA, Mrs.C.A. Latham of Los Angeles, CA, Mr. Frank c. Greene of Glendale, CA, Mr. Don W. McDonald of Long Beach, CA, Mr. Enno Meyer of Milford, Ohio. (Sunday) Mrs. Chas. G. Gilbert of Van Nuys, CA, Mrs. W.A. Martel of Los Angeles, CA, Charles G. Gilbert of Van Nuys, CA, Frank Porter Miller, M.D. of Riverside, CA, John Sinnott of San Diego, CA. Veterinarians:  Dr. Thomas Rundle of Oxnard, CA and Dr. E.H. Houchin of Ventura, CA Superintendent:  Irene Onstad of Los Angeles, CA Saturday Best In Show Trophy donated by the Ventura City Council. Sunday Best In Show Trophy donated by Ventura Chamber of Commerce.

On Saturday, July 29, 1972, the Ventura County Dog Fanciers Assoc held its Forty-Fifth All Breed Show and Obedience Trial. The Honorary President was Mrs. Edna Conway.  Edna was a long time member of this club and contributed many years of hard work. Mr. Owen Derryberry was President, Mr. Lee Reasin was Vice President, Mrs Grace Wilson was Treasurer, Mrs. Diann Schiller was Corresponding Sec'y, Mrs. Rhonda Todd was Recording Sec'y, Directors were Betty Ross, Earl Keller, Georgia Ingram, and William Bergum. The Best In Show judge was Mr. Harry James Thomas.

On Sunday, January 23, 2000 the Ventura County Dog Fanciers held their 100 th AKC All Breed Dog Show.  The Club Pesident was Mrs. Betsy Harvey, Vice President was Mrs. Ann Boardman, Treasurer was Mrs. Ruth Pedersen, Corres. Sec'y was Mrs. Roberta Lombardi, Rec. Sec'y was Mrs. Michele Flickinger, Past President was Mrs. Nancy Wallis.  The Club Directors were:  Diana Karle, Jane Nakagawa, Jean Raba, Linda Turner, Bob Wallis and Sandy Weinraub.  The Superintendent was Jack Bradshaw.

Judges at the 100th Show were: Ms. Dany Canino, Mr. Doug Cassidy, Mrs. Linda Churchill, Mr. Arthur J Davison, Mrs. Joy Davison, Ms. Mary Lou Harris, Dr. H. Scott Kellogg, Mr. Vincent G. Mulligan, Mr. Ken Neill, Mr. Ted Nichols, Mrs. Adelene Pardo.
