Cage Information

This is my indoor cage. Notice that my ceramic heat emitter, day and night lights are attached to the top of my cage using a porcelain or cermanic base. My UVB light is mounted on the side of my cage. My cool mist humidifier and my egg box are at the bottom of my cage. Use potting soil and sand for the egg box. Many an owner of a female iguana has been shocked to find that females can lay eggs without being any where near a male iguana. Problems with eggs is a major killer of female iguanas. Be prepared.
All our indoor cages have double doors for easier cleaning. Use diluted clorox for cleaning. Substrate should be newspapers, vinyl or indoor/outdoor carpeting. If using indoor/outdoor carpeting, buy two pieces so you can clean one piece. Home Depot marked down a remnant for us. Avoid cedar, corn cob and bark substrates. Notice that there is no heat rock is any of our cages. Heat rocks can burn iguanas.
UVB light is NOT supplied by the round dome light sold by most pet stores. UVB is a requirement during winter months. UVB light is not transmitted through windows or glass. Buy a florescent fixture and remove any plastic or glass that covers the light. The UVB light should be placed 18 inches to 24 inches from your iguana's favorite basking place. Samantha recommends ZooMed 5.0 products or a new Active light which produces heat and UVB light.
These are the outdoor cages that Felix and myself use during the summer. These cages were specially built by my dad. Getting the real sun during the summers in Virgina Beach helps to keep me healthy. On very hot days, dad lays a garden hose with pin holes across our cages for a misting since iguanas can get overheated. All three of all us have outdoor cages. All of our cages are made from plywood, Internet plastic wire and untreated wood. Chicken wire is hazardous to iguanas. Lowes carries plastic wire. If you can't find plastic wiring or if you want a 48 inch wide roll, then contact:
