Hi! Welcome to Varun's adobe. You wont really find a very flashy website here - I have tried to put in as many things as I liked, but not spent too much time on decoration.... I hope you find whatever you came here for !

Well, here I have some information about me, my bio data in HTML or as Word Document, and a small list of my current activities, and finally my biggest hobby - Astronomy ! Also, you may want some good links about anything mentioned on my page. Go on ... of course you can email me (varunb@iitb.ac.in) for any more details you want, or simply fill up the form below.

Me, myself, etc, etc....

Ah ! So, I am Varun Bhalerao. I currently study in IIT Bombay, in Dept. of Electrical Engg. If this web page is really updated, I have just finished First year. I stay on campus, in Hostel 3, Room 257, IITB.

I come from Pune, Maharashtra , India . I was born and brought up there. I did my schooling in Dr. Kalmadi Shamarao High School (earlier called Karnatak High School), followed by Junior College in Fergusson College. Then I did an year of Mech. Engg. at MIT, Pune (Maharashtra Institute of Technology) before coming to IIT Bombay.

My interests have been in Physics since childhood. I love asking questions, and then set out to find answers. My interests include Physics, Astronomy, and then badminton, music on the lighter side. My latest attempt is playing the Flute, but as of now, I am quite sure you dont want to listen. That apart, I proudly say that I have a large friend circle, and a great one too. BTW you are also a part of it !

Astronomy

My astronomy interests come essentially from the Astronomy Olympiad , in which I represented India thrice. I continued my interests in the olympaid later too... and currently I have played a role in training the last three years teams for the International Astronomy Olmypiad, taught at an International Astronomy School held in Lucknow and so on. I am also very active in the astronomy olympiad group - we call ourself "Astronuts" . I am active in the IITB astronomy club too, and there we conduct night-outs, do some data collection etc. I have a great collection of astronomy links, sites which I have seen myself and found useful. Some of them are given here. You can contact me if you want more !

Of course, here are details of the astronomy olympaid : Dr. Vahia is the coordinator and maintains the details on his site.

Current activities

Well, I am currently discovering the joy of being in IITB. That means I am trying out everything that I can, and rather successfully too ! I participated in a lot of Tech events, and made a best out of most of them. I won the Exposition contest - I gave a lecture on " Look at a star ", which coverd how we can analyse starlight to find out a lot about their structure composition etc. I came second in Freshtech, a quiz competition for First-yearites, where I had teamed up with Anosh Raj. My teammate Surhud More came third in Scitech - the quiz competition. Okay, I may really be messing up the chronology here, but I have also won the "Best Technical Excellence" award in the Yantriki intra-IIT robotics competition. This was follwed by a special mention for my machine - " Tevdhach Maaaz " in yantriki mains level 1. I also topped in the exposition competition and the Original Idea Presentation Competition (OIPC). I was awarded Tech Freshperson of the year and am now the Techsecretary of my hostel. Academically, the second semester has been good, and the result are coming out... I'll upload them only when they are completely available. I was 9.51/10 in the first sem.

Outside IIT - my latest achievement is the Aditya Birla Scholarship, which was awarded to an IITB student after three years ! The interview was a great experience, undoubtedly - the panel consisted of Dr. Kasturirangan, Dr. Mashelkar, Dr. Kakodkar, and Dr. Arvind Kumar. (If you dont know who they are, you really should take a look at the scholarship web site.)

In other fields, I played a role in setting this years International Astronomy Olympaid paper. I had also played a part in selection and training of the Indian team, which came back with amazing results ! This was the first time ever, that India got 4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals ! Other olympiads and other countries look out, astronuts lead the way !
