TO BHMA
Students at last!!! The Center staff is happy to be past all that is involved with September identification.  We are excited about our T.A.G. unit this year, and if you were not with us at Open House, please take the time to look over a copy of the curriculum web on the reverse side of this newsletter.

Our overall theme is “The Groovy Greeks: A study of present day systems rooted in the past.” We have just completed the first unit, Get Your Year in Gear, where we analyzed the center and the systems employed to keep it running smoothly.  Our next unit, Democracy Rules!,  will take us back to Athens and Sparta to get a new lens for analyzing our own governmental system.

In case you are curious about the name of our newsletter this year, it comes from the masthead of a famous Greek newspaper.  The term “To Bhma”  ( To – Ve’ ma )  refers to the platform from which an orator would deliver an important  address.  This bi-monthly communication is a vital link between the Center, your child’s classroom, and the home.  The name seemed a good fit.

While on the subject of communication, Wednesday, October 22, will be our first Family Night of the year.  The Center will be open from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for you to drop by for an informal visit.

This is an opportunity for your child to share their Center experience and work with you.  If you can only come for a few minutes, that’s fine. Remember, the Center is open for Family Night four times a year.  Classroom teachers and administrators are also welcome to visit and see what their students are doing.

We do have one urgent need and perhaps someone out there can help.  As you may know, the Center was divided into three sections last summer and
placed in three different schools.  That meant that Center supplies had to be divided as well.  We tried to be as fair and as wise as King Solomon, but there just wasn’t enough there for everyone to have even the basics.

That said, the Lake Ridge Center desperately needs a small TV with an integrated VCR.  Many of our contracts use video tapes as a resource. As the US makes its switch to digital, perhaps some of you might be disposing of such an “antique” :>)

Reminders:

• For snacks we ask that you send something healthy…something that is not sticky or messy that would interfere with their work. Pretzels, carrot sticks, granola bars, trail mix or a banana would all work. Avoid high sugar, salty or greasy treats.

• With the cold and flu season already upon us, please remember that we cannot keep or dispense any medication at the Center. These need to be brought to the school nurse here at Lake Ridge with a PWCS form.  These are available at your base school’s front office.

• Please remember to have your child bring in his/her supplies:
(3) 2 pocket folders
                  Pencils
                  Loose leaf paper
Kleenex, paper towels, or zip bags.

Above all, please know what really terrific children you have and that we are available as a resource for you. If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us or visit our Parents Resource page on our web site.
