                 Those Groovy Greeks

They Had a System
           Techniques for Achieving Goals

The gears are turning…and it isn’t just on the bulletin board outside our door. The children have rapidly picked up on the complex concept of Systems and the role they play in the world around us.  By examining this concept in an ancient culture, the children are able to step back, analyze, and make connections to how the many systems work around us everyday.

We began by looking at the SIGNET Center as a system. Identifying its Elements, Boundaries, Input / Output, and Behavior not only helped familiarize the children with the workings of the center, but also opened the door to understanding the more intricate systems of a civilization.

We moved on to our current unit on Government Systems: Democracy Rules!. The Greeks system of direct democracy may have been different from our representative one, but the strong influence is evident.  The students are now creating their own city-state systems and developing laws to define their culture.  Our next stop will be language systems.  Anyone for singing and dancing the abgs ?

This is the month for information meetings regarding Middle School Specialty Programs.  Parents of all current PWC Fifth Graders should have received a pamphlet through the mail regarding the dates of these meetings and the programs offered.  Check with your school’s counselor if you have further questions.

We urge all fifth grade parents to attend one of these meetings, even if you are not considering having your child attend one of these programs at this time.  You may change your mind, and once the application deadlines have passed, it is too late to change your mind.
