          Those Groovy Greeks
     Techniques for Achieving Goals

Leaping Groundhogs!! (They do leap don’t they?) Just when we thought we could write off this anachronism as myth, the little rodent comes through with an accurate prediction.
Students are currently working in the second portion, Altius, of our Groovy Greek simulation as we strive to solve higher level problems.  We continue to focus on the All-Star Thinking Team from Ancient Greece. (Ask about Pythagoras and the 100 bulls.)

Field Trip News

It may only be February, but plans are already in the works for our Math-Science Day field trip on Friday, May 20th.  ALL students attend SIGNET on Friday of that week instead of their regular  attendance day.  Parents are responsible for transportation both to and from the Center that day due to the early departure and late return of the students. Make your plans now for the necessary schedule changes.
The cost is going to remain a little higher this year due to the necessity of having to go with a commercial company as opposed to school buses we had been able to use in years past.  The cost includes admission to the field day event, any special shows or programs, and all-you-can-eat picnic lunch, and commercial bus transportation.
Season passes for the summer of
2005 will be honored again, however, a processing fee is being assessed by Kings Dominion as the park is not open to the public that day. The cost will be $45.  Pass Holders will pay $30. This fee includes admission, picnic, shows, and commercial bus transportation.
Once we know how many students will be attending, we can determine the number of seats available for parents and will draw names for chaperones. (Seating is limited.)
Teams will be forming to compete against each other for a chance to represent the center in the competition events at the Math-Science Day.  Last year we took a second place ribbon in the junior division over 45 teams!!  Problem solving rules over luck in working with limited supplies in a limited amount of time, to achieve a specific goal.  Our focus, as always, is to improve those problem solving skills.
Along with competition pieces, the Science Museum of VA will return with the Science by Van activities.  We will also be invited to attend special demonstration shows.
(More information on the back.)

More Thoughts

With the New Year always comes those resolutions to do better. One thought we would like to pass along is the subject of healthy snacks.  As the holidays came upon us we began to notice that the nutritional quality of some of our students’ snacks deteriorated.  Chips, candy bars, and other greasy or highly sugared snack items are NOT appropriate.  Students are free to eat as they work during the independent research time, but snacks need to be healthy and neat so as not to interfere with the work process.
Reminders:

Wed. Feb 16th:

Family Night 6:30-8:00 PM

The Center will be open again for you to drop by for an informal visit.  If you can only come for a few minutes, that’s fine.  Classroom teachers and administrators from home base schools are always welcome too. If schools are not open for after-school activities, Family Night will be canceled.

Above all, remember what really terrific children you have, and that we are a resource for you as well.
